Best online place to digitize DVD’s

I’ve never done this before and what I read, you have to open an account on some internet website.

Have anyone of you done this and which do you like?

My D downloaded a one month free trial of a DVD ripper program and copied them all to a 2 TB portable drive. She saved them all as MPEG4 to save on space and make them available to most electronics. She finished what she wanted to do within the month and never had to pay for the software.

Make a throwaway email address to register for things like this. Don’t use the one you give out for personal use.

Thanks, I guess I didn’t know you can make a throwaway email address when registering. I’ll look for a free one. I did find one you could buy for $29. I make music DVD for us, and plan on continuing that. It might be worthwhile to buy the software.

I tried Southtree last year. Sent them one VHS tape from when my daughter was a baby. After waiting a long time, I finally got a link in an email telling me I can see my video on-line (I was only paying for them to put on a DVD) asking if I wanted to subscribe to this on-line service. I click on the link and it was somebody’s wedding (not my video). I called and complained, telling them they were violating people’s privacy by giving out the wrong video. They apologized said it was a very rare mistake and my DVDs would be on their way. A week or so later I got back my VHS tape and 3 DVDs - one was an eagle scout ceremony, another a memorial service, and a third some kind of party - again not my video. I asked for and received a complete refund. So I suggest you don’t use Southtree.

Handbrake is a free, open-source DVD to digital converter.
I’ve used it for years to convert [non-drm] DVD recordings to various digital formats.
Pretty easy to use.

Versions for Macs, Windows and Linux machines.

Thanks @WayOutWestMom …I’m going to give that one a try.

@WayOutWestMom …can you share it with others. I make music DVDs of our family vacations, and I’d like the kids to be able to access it also, wherever they are.

Handbrake is dvd-to-digital conversion software that you run on your own home computer, not an online conversion & storage service. When you run the software, a digital output file containing the DVD’s contents will be stored on the disk drive of your home computer.

There are a bunch of ways to share the file–

You can send the digital file to other people via email or via physical media (like a thumb drive).

Or you can upload the digital file to a dropbox site or to your cloud storage and give family members access to download it from there.

Or if you can send the file via FTP directly to another computer. (For instructions on how to do this–https://www.wikihow.com/Set-up-an-FTP-Between-Two-Computers)

Or use the built-in file sharing option if you have a MAC (see: https://support.apple.com/kb/ph25605?locale=en_US)

Well, I downloaded Handbrake and tried to use it. It said it couldn’t do it for my DVD. I tried!
