Best Option for APUSH?

So, I recently bought REA’s AP Guidebook for U.S History. I also bought Barron’s flashcards. The flashcards are useful but daunting. The guidebook is okay as well, but not exactly the best layout. To any who have tried others, do you have any advice on which is the best?

Also, are details such as dates emphasized on the exam? I know dates of significant events are important to know, but are dates such as the founding of different colonies and dates treaties were signed essential to know as well?

Any tips or advice you can give on study plans or the exam is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

As far as dates go, know major events and know treaties, especially if the treaty has major consequences, like adding land or ending a war, for example. (Plus, there are three Treaties of Paris.) It’s also important to know the dates of events that will have a significant impact later in history, and what events/effects leading up to that impact are. For example, the 1763 Treaty of Paris not only ended the French/Indian War but also paved the way for the American Revolution because it helped bring the colonists together and made them feel more distant from Britain, since there was no longer a need for British protection from the French.

Memorize, memorize, memorize, but also UNDERSTAND and BE ABLE TO MAKE THE CONNECTIONS between events, actions, and wars, like I did above with the 1763 Treaty of Paris. You need to be able to see the big picture as well as the specific details of the big picture.

I used REA’s Guidebook for topics where I felt my knowledge was seriously deficient; the REA is good for learning detailed info about what you don’t know at all. Otherwise, a more general review book like Barron’s or Kaplan’s will work.

Sorry if this is vague, but it’s hard to explain strategy when you’re no longer taking the class. Feel free to ask other questions.

Use REA crash course or 5 Steps to a 5. This was my 1st AP class I ever took and I took it as a sophomore and I got a 4.
