Even though the iPhone can do that for free, the “Marco! Polo!” thing is pretty cute.

Re: tech support. I have no experience with Verizon, but the folks at the local AT&T stores are pretty iPhone-savvy. I suspect Verizon stores’ employees have similar experience since iPhone is such a popular device.

If you are still on campus, ask you classmates how happy they are with the cellular signal (if you are home, you can ask them via Facebook). You might find out that one of the carriers has almost zero bars while another has a tower planted in the middle of the campus.

^^This. Ask which carrier works best if you are going to switch anyway!
People who have iphones are very satisfied. We are an android family. We are currently looking at the Galaxy S5 and the HTC One M8, which seem to be the front runners. If you go with Verizon and have a Costco membership, they currently have the Samsung Galaxy S5 for $99 and their website has a $50 rebate–pretty good for a newly released phone! Costco also sells AT&T and maybe even TMobile, but I don’t know their phone specials. The other nice thing about Costco is they always include an extra accessories pack which usually includes a car charger, phone case, etc.

Keep in mind that rumor has it the new iPhone 6 (yet to be released) may not have a standard headphone jack. That would be a deal breaker for me: <a href=“Apple Jacks The Headphone Port : NPR”>Apple Jacks The Headphone Port : NPR;

They’re changing so much about it that I don’t want the iPhone 6 when it comes out. I’m holding out to see what it looks like, what it can and cannot do, and how people handle it. I’m unsure if I even want the curved back surface… :-<

Rumors about the iPhone 6 or whatever they call it are likely nonsense.

Be interesting to see when it is released. Apple has a history of being on the cutting edge by removing what folks think of as “standard” items - thinking of the floppy drive several years back, then the super drive and in their laptops, ethernet ports just to name a few. It wouldn’t surprise me at all to see them omitting the 3.5 mm headphone jack, particularly given they now own Beats headphones. I agree with @Niquii77 that it’s probably a good idea to wait when the iPhone6 comes out. Let someone else work out the bugs.

There is no smoke without fire. Rumors about power connector on iPhone 5 had been swirling long before it was released. I do not care about headphones at all since I never use my phone to listen to music.

I listen to audiobooks on my Android via the Audible app when I walk. It’s handy for me to carry only one device so I would care very much if there was no headphone jack. Which is why I likely will just stay with my droid.

I’m happy with our iPhone 5, even tho is it now a dinosaur. It looks very much like the 5s, but we got it 12/31/12 and will not be getting new phones until around the same date in 2014. Dad has a 5s and mom has a 4; both are OK with their phones. It is fairly intuitive to use, which is a good thing. Dad is able to use the calendar and other functions.

I would definitely ask neighbors, friends and peers about signal strength in your campus and your folks’ home to be sure you get a phone that works for both areas. In our experience, Verizon tends to have the best signal strength, though they are probably the most expensive. Our S wanted unlimited data and asked us to get Sprint for the unlimited data, so that is why we ended up with Sprint. It is useful when we travel but he travels much more than the rest of us combined and likes it for travel and airports. :)

Sorry you’ve gotten an early termination from your phone service for excessive roaming. That was something I feared with Sprint, but it hasn’t been an issue. Agree that some places can fix a broken screen for fairly reasonable prices.

My sister swears by Android phones but we are enjoying our foray into smart phones with the iPhones so far. We are having our adult kids choose our next phone and service provider when this one expires, so we don"t have to decide, We end up with analysis paralysis and figure out kids use their phones much more than we do anyway. Much of our extended family has switched to Verizon because of superior signal strength, but our S really loves the unlimited Sprint data.

I’ve been very happy with my iPhone 5c–I saw no reason to pay the extra bucks for the 5s.

I’m a contrarian…I’m using a Windows Nokia Lumia 920 I bought used for $100 about 6 months ago. It is a Windows phone and has Windows 8.1 version installed. It is setup with Straight Talk AT&T service. I like everything about it except that some apps available on Android and iPhone aren’t available for my Windows phone.

H is hoping we will get a Windows phone next, so it will be compatible with all our computers. We shall see.

Just got a Galaxy S5. Love it, love it, love it. H, S1, D1 all got iphones. I like the long battery life, the larger size of the screen and the keyboard.

Unless all your other tech devices are Apple, AND u are into collecting obscure apps, AND you have have under-40 eyesight, get a Samsung Galaxy.

Galaxy advantages:

The different sales people in the AT&T shops who have used both say the Galaxy is a superior device.

I have a Galaxy Note. My kids have iphones.

Another Galaxy fan. I have the S4.

I ended up getting an iPhone 5s. I’ve had it for a week and it’s great!

Do any of you have the Galaxy Mega? It seems to be a cross between a phone and a tablet. (It is bigger than the Note.) I have an obsolete 3G Motorola Bravo which has been a good phone, but is really small. So small that I don’t really use its smart phone capabilities because I can’t see it. I’m thinking of going big. Any thoughts on that?

It is. It’s a gadget lover’s dream. It has so many features. I am sure I will never learn everything about what it can do. I just learned that I could use my iPhone to level. It works much better than the bubble thing. Now all my pictures are straight!

Young ones went samsung galaxy, oldies went iPhone. Both happy. Do like the larger screen on the Samsung though.
