I need to send flowers or a a plant to an aquaintance due to a death in the family. I’d appreicate any suggestions as to what site to use that has nice, reasonably priced selections with reasonable shipping costs. Also, do you think a plant or flowers is more appropriate? This is going to the family’s home, not a funeral home. Thanks.

I’ve had good experience with the quality of flowers ordered online, but the price and shipping costs are far from reasonable. Your best bet is to find a florist that’s local to your friend’s area. Look on yelp.com and search on “florists” in your friend’s city, then call the top florist directly.

I’ve had consistent good luck with www 1800flowers com (eliminate spaces and add dots accordingly :)

I’ve used calyx and corolla.

As for plants versus flowers – are these the kind of people who have plants and enjoy tending to them?

If so, I’d send a plant, otherwise, flowers.

I’ve had good luck with 1800 flowers. I do not use FTD. Their flowers always look “canned” to me. To me, the best way to go is to get online and call the florist near their home yourself. You can ask the florist what they just got in, what looks particularly pretty. You can describe the plant you might like and perhaps see if they have a pretty pot to place it in. They will add a delivery charge but generally speaking it will be cheaper than FTD. I still have the florists near various relatives in my outlook, because I do this all the time. I always get raves about the arrangements from the recipients.

I agree with the advice to use a local florist rather than one of the big national firms. I have received higher quality flowers and much better service from the locals. (I think that may be because they are more concerned about their reputation and are hoping to impress and get future business from the flower’s recipient.)

Calyx and Corolla have gorgeous flowers but they are very expensive. I’ve ordered from 1800flowers.com and proflowers.com and both are fine. Once I sent some from proflowers not realizing the person would be out of town during their birthday. When I called to tell them, they said ‘no problem’ and sent a fresh bouquet when the person came home at no extra charge.

Not sure if this would do for sympathy flowers, but the best web site I know is [Fresh Roses and Wholesale DIY Wedding Flowers - 2G Roses](http://www.freshroses.com/). I always order the table roses which are slightly shorter than the long stem. On the order page I select 2 dozen, I think it is $10 more than 1 dozen. The roses are shipped overnight Fed Ex, each with its little water bubble. They open and last for several days.
Sorry for your family’s loss.

I’ve used Calyx and Corolla and think they have beautiful arrangements. I’ve also called my local florist and asked if he could recommend a florist in X, Y, or Z city who does similar types of arrangements. Flowers vs. plants–I like plants, and I still have a plant that my mil gave me following fil’s funeral nine years ago. I’ve divided it and added to it and it still looks great.

I got the most beautiful roses for Valentine’s Day, and H ordered them online from Costco! Much nicer packaging and delivery than I’ve received from FTD or 1800flowers.

I’ve had consistent good luck with proflowers.com Never used them for plants, only cut flowers.
Does your friend like plants? If you don’t know go with flowers or a flowering plant that’s not intended to be kept alive forever, like a cyclamen or hydranga or miniature rose or azelea.

DS is abroad this year; he used 1800 flowers to send me a dozen roses for Valentine’s Day. After I managed to pick myself up off the floor, I placed them in a vase and they lasted for almost 2 weeks. I’ve used them before and I was very pleased with the quality and the price.

I just look for a local florist in the place I want to send them and make sure it’s an FTD florist. I’ve always had good luck with what I’ve sent, and they’ve been helpful delivering in a timely way. One day, I had very short notice for a funeral, but the local florist had the list of names for local services, and promised to have it there by 4:00 p.m. (This was at 9 a.m.). Very small town.

I am a huge Proflowers fan. Everyone in my family uses them, and we always get great compliments about the flowers. They have great deals & you can usually find an online coupon.

We have found Proflowers to be better & less expensive than sending flowers locally.

Another “big thumbs up” for ProFlowers.

Just a thought. We have had good experiences with sending gift baskets from Wayne’s Market. They ship anywhere in the US.

Just noticed the ad for ProFlowers on the left of this page…

Went with ProFlowers - thanks to everyone for your help!

Oops, too late. Would have recommended ProFlowers, too.

Pro Flowers has delivered some of the most exquisite bouquets to the many special women in our life. Highly recommended for other posters. Flowers last a long time, and they always look lovely, we have heard.
