Best program to apply to for easier entry

Hey everyone,

This 2015-2016 year I will be a Senior in a Michigan High School. Currently I want to get into MSU (Michigan State University) with a 2.9 unwieghted GPA and a 28 ACT. I have a few honors (Precalc, Physics and Lit) classes that I have taken throughout high school and my senior year I will be taking 4 AP’s. These past two summers I have been working with an MSU professor who said he would put me as a co-author in his paper, along with giving me a good letter of recommendation. I also have a 100+ hours of community service and my father is a professor there along with my brother who is alumni.

Basically, I want to know if I have a chance of directly applying to MSU’s Engineering program (which is what I want to get into) or if I should apply for their Math department (which is heard was easier to get into). I just want to apply to the right department so I can increase my chances of getting into this University. I know my GPA is quite lower than the average MSU student. I also plan on retaking the ACT.

Any input would be greatly appreciated,
