Oddly, NY and CA also have more people… so a proportional measurement wouldn’t have any problems.

haha well if you want to do that you can do that, I don’t have time to do that with all my summer classes. That was a stupid statement though haha

wow haha. Good job getting Maine in there. In my experience, UMaine-Farmington is more prestigious than UMFK as far as non-UMO instate schools go (which are pretty much not at all comparable to Orono). Both are known primarily as teaching schools, but Fork Kent is literally in the middle of nowhere, which hurts its applicant levels. I’ve heard that their French program is very good though, as it is closer to Canada than to the nearest town in which there are more people than Moose.

Tier 1: Respected across the state
UNC Chapel Hill & NC State*
UNCA
App State & UNCW

Tier 2: Regional schools. Typically people who couldn’t get into T1 schools or want to commute.
ECU & UNCC & UNCG & WCU

Tier 3: HBCUs and the worst publics
NC Central
NC A&T
UNCP
ECSU & WSSU
FSU

There is also NC School of the Arts, which due to its nature does not fit neatly into the above groupings. It’s great for what it does, however.

There is a noticeable drop in quality between each set of schools. I do not like to bash schools, but UNC Pembroke is so lacking in even mediocre applicants that it advertises on billboards along the side of the highway.

*NCSU is weaker by most objective measures, but it’s excellent for what it does. People typically apply to Chapel Hill for arts & sciences and State for engineering, textiles, agriculture, etc.

How I’d rank Missouri

Truman State
Missouri-Columbia
Missouri University of Science and Technology
University of Missouri at Kansas City

For New York, if you’re including Brooklyn and Queens, I think CCNY should be included too

Gotcha pierre, thanks for the heads up. Knowing that, your list is accurate.

I feel like you must have just posted the schools you had heard of. It goes:

Tier 1:
Madison

Tier 2:
LaCrosse
Eau Claire
Green Bay

Tier 3:
River Falls
Milwaukee

Then there are some that are really good for niches. UW-Stevens Point is fantastic if you’re into forestry or an outdoors-related major (and you don’t mind the 2:1 guy-girl ratio).

The other interesting thing about Wisconsin is that you could probably group the Wisconsin and Minnesota publics together because they offer reciprocity to each other.

“I feel like you must have just posted the schools you had heard of”

That’s probably right. That’s why I’m asking for your input in adjusting this list haha

Warblers,

I would move ECU into Tier 1. I think it has a reputation that is equal to or better than UNCW.

Other than that, your list is spot on.

Still don’t get the point here. You have to be in-state for a public college to be a “great” alternative to private colleges financially speaking, and I would think residents of each state are well aware of their state’s local public colleges. (In fact, here on CC we often hear complaints that high school guidance offices are overly wed to in-state publics.) I can certainly say that all the students here in CT are well aware of the CT public colleges. (I’ll also opine that there’s nothing “great” about the directional universities in CT.)

Alaska (in this order)
University of Alaska Fairbanks
University of Alaska Anchorage
University of Alaska Southeast (Juneau)

I am puzzled by your inclusion of West Georgia over GSU. Actually, I’m kind of puzzled about your inclusion of West Georgia, period. I’ve never heard anything of note about it…

If you want to make this really relevant, then maybe next to the “lower-tier” colleges we could highlight great programs. For example, Indiana State University may not compare with Indiana University or Purdue, but it has great nursing, teaching, criminology, and insurance programs.

alright, well if anybody has some suggestions about in-state academic programs, we could highlight those too.

MommaJ that’s definitely true about in-state schools but there are some schools like New Mexico Tech, Central Florida, New College of Florida etc… that have a great reputation but not that many people out of state know about them. And a lot of people recently have been asking about the CSU’s so that’s where I got this idea.

I’m pretty sure that it’s more relevant than a thread debating about the merits of US News though haha

Why isn’t Mississippi State listed?

New York:

Tier 1:
SUNY-Binghamton
SUNY-Geneseo

Tier 2:
SUNY-Buffalo
SUNY-Stony Brook

All of the other state schools in NY aren’t worth mentioning (with the exception of the honors CUNY schools maybe?)

^ SUNY New Paltz has a really good education program and is known for the arts.

I think this seems most accurate to me (in descending order):
