Best schools for neuroscience major and premed track?

I’m beginning the college selection process, and I’ve found neuroscience to be the most interesting major for me. I am a huge fan of both psychology and biology, and from what I’ve read, neuroscience is a mix of both. My goal is to finish my undergrad in 4 years, and then move onto medical school, but I’m having trouble finding schools that have a good neuroscience major as well as being a good school to prepare me for medical school. I’ve come here to get some insight from students who are currently majoring in neuroscience and are premed, or from students who know of good schools that offer these two studies.

I’m not a student but I know something about your interests. You can major in anything and go to medical school as long as you have the course prerequisites, high grades in those courses, a high GPA, a good MCAT, letters of rec, and maybe some research or clinical experience. So neuroscience or psychology or dance. I have no idea why you’d have trouble finding a school good in neuroscience from which you could attend med school given what I’ve said.

Neuroscience is generally considered an excellent preparation for medical school, but, again, so are a lot of other fields. So if you could clarify your quandary it would be some help.

Thanks for the response. Like I stated, I’m very interested in the brain and it’s role in our body. I’ve also read about being able to major in just about anything and still getting into med school, but neuroscience is my number one interest at this point. I’m looking for a school that contains a strong neuroscience program, and is able to prepare me for medical school as well.

This is for grad school but it should have a good indication of the undergrad program: http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-science-schools/neurosciences-rankings

okay, now that we’ve cleared that up and you’ve had a chance to look at the urls @jsies11‌ posted, how about giving us some stats on you so that we can narrow our focus?

Since you are interested in neuroscience, but as a path to medical school not to work in the area, you might try looking for schools you like that happen to have neuroscience and a successful pre-med track record and work from that angle. You can take neuroscience at either a university or a LAC, some people prefer one over another and they key here is to be in a learning environment in which you will do your best.

D is doing the neuroscience/pre-med track at a LAC, she passed over “better” neuroscience programs to get the school she wanted, although the program she is in is very good. But the school for her was more important, as long as the program was good enough. If you want neuroscience with big football weekends and blowout Greek parties, go for that if it will enhance your chances at being happy, which generally means higher grades.

Thanks for the responses everyone. MrMoM, I want a school that has the things you stated (big football weekends, parties, etc.), but I definitely don’t want this to be the focus of my college life. I would like a school that is balanced with both academics and social life. As of now, my stats are 28 ACT, 3.9 GPA UW, APAS, AP Bio, AP Lang, AP Gov, AP Calc AB, HPreCal, HSpan4, HGeo, HAlg2, top 25th of class, 100+ hours of volunteering at random places, 50+ of volunteering at local hospital (should be around 100 by the end of the summer), I have a bunch of other little things. I hope to raise my ACT to at least a 30 before applying. Also I’ve noticed that there are several other threads regarding this, but they were all outdated.

Sounds like you’ve thought about what you’re looking for which is the most important first step. Just try using SuperMatch at left and see what starts popping out. Once you get an initial list, you can start asking about specifics that SuperMatch can’t answer.
