best summer college storage suggestions

S is expecting to start a full-time job at some point this summer or fall, thousands of miles away from LA. He wants to store his “stuff” and have it hauled there. D also is not sure what she’s doing this summer and may be returning to HI and want to store things. We have never tried storing things before and would like suggestions and experiences of folks who have had GOOD experiences with storage.

I have suggested S consider selling everything & buying again when he gets to new location, but he’s happy that employer will pay relocation costs. I have also suggested he consider subletting & storing his stuff at a friend’s this summer (some are staying over the summer). He & D are considering these options as well. Both are currently at USC.

Would love to read folks’ experiences.

My best advice - don’t try to reinvent the wheel - go through the college. Your kids aren;t the only ones that have had to store over the summer. It is probably a well-oiled procedure.

We stored D’s stuff over all the summers in Miami, and had a fine experience at a U-Haul storage facility, where we put the items in a storage locker ourselves. It was immaculate. My advice would be to make SURE that the locker you rent is climate-controlled. It costs a little more, but it’s worth it. I’ve heard too many stories about moldy linens and furniture from people who were, let us say, overly thrifty. It’s only a few extra dollars per month. Good luck.

Do they have access to a car? Since USC’s summer storage program seems a tad overpriced, I’d look for a storage room at a regular facilitate that they can share. Maybe see if a couple friends want to share it. These places always seem to have move-in specials, and the ones I’m familiar with offer some very small spaces.
