Best track coach Ivy League

Who is the best track coach in the Ivy League and which coach cares about the kids as students?

trackpop,

Welcome to CC. Boy, you certainly know how to ask a difficult question. I think you’ll possiblly get 8 different answers depending on who you talk to. I think your athlete (son or daughter) should do some research on each program, contact the coach and make your own judgement. “Best Ivy Track Coach” is a very subjective title. Some folks may look at Ivy championships, some folks may look at accessability & training, and other factors in determining who (coach) is the “best” for them. My son’s approach was education (major) first and coach was second. He spoke to a few Ivy coaches and determined what was best for him and our family situation. My advice would be for your son or daughter to the same, and determine who is the best Ivy Track coach for your situation.

Thank you. We have visited all the schools and coaches and are, of course, considering the school itself as a priority. My hope was that there might be information or perhaps to some degree. anecdotes that might also be helpful.

As fenwaysouth said, way too many variables to say one coach is clearly ‘the best’. I will say that we had some interaction with the track coaches at Harvard, Cornell, Princeton, Dartmouth and Penn and we were comfortable with all of them. I think in the Ivy’s coaches understand that their athletes are students first.

Since there are different coaches for different track events, it is impossible to compare school to school coaches. Are you a jumper, thrower, sprinter, mid- or long distancer?

Each person has her own criteria for judging a coach. You must determine your own list of qualities you seek.

And be aware that team staff change, your chosen coach may move on to a better offer any year.

my son is a sprinter

You might want to look at the sprint results from your son’s favorite Ivies. Have the results improved with the coach? Do the sprinters on the team return the next season (uninjured)? Or is there a big turnover, with many new freshmen recruited in to take the slots of upperclassmen injured, or burnt out- either from over-training or academic demands?
