Best Transfer Schools for Adult Student in/near NYC?

Hello!

My husband and I will be moving across the country as he’s found his dream job there! I would love to finish my education while we’re out there (I already have my AA). It’s always been a dream of mine to live in NYC for a bit and I would love to make this happen while finishing my education, but I am not naive and know that it is INTENSE and expensive.

If money were of no importance, I would wholeheartedly be all for Columbia GS, but from what I’ve found it seems that most students graduate with a LARGE amount of debt, even for just two years. I will still be applying for Spring 2018, but want to keep my options open. What I’m hoping to find are other schools that are great for transfers, but still carry a bit of prestige with them. I have a 4.0 GPA and I don’t want to settle on what’s easiest or cheapest.

Any advice?

Thank you in advance!

Columbia has a specific program for adult students.

This might be a good question to ask @sybbie719 who is one of our NYC area experts.

What is your major? What is your budget range?

@happymomof1 Great! I’m a psych major and my budget is…taking on as little debt as possible. I am low-income and nearly 30, so no help from parents. I’m willing to take on debt, but I don’t want to be paying a ridiculously high amount, if that makes sense.

Your best bet would be to wait until you have lived in NYC for a year (in order to obtain residency) and apply to CUNY. Hunter, Baruch and City College (all in manhattan) Queens, Bklyn, all have great psych programs. Tuition is approximately $7000 year. Psych is one of those majors where almost every school has a good major at the undergrad level. IMHO, it would not be worth it to pay for Columbia GS unless you work for the university and are attending for free, especially since you already know that it will not be affordable without a lot of loans that you won’t be able to take.

You need to live in the city for a year to in order to be eligible for in-city tuition and to apply for NYS aid

If you and your spouse make under $110k 2018-2019 or 125k 2019-2020, you would be eligible for free tuition with the Excelsior scholarship
