I’m trying to find out which has the best economics department.
Any info I could get would be helpful.

Thanks.

it’s either going to be berkeley or LA. Both are really good. William Sharpe’s pretty famous at UCLA for econ (transferred from berkeley to la)

[William Forsyth Sharpe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](William F. Sharpe - Wikipedia)

but berkeley has more nobel laureates in econ than UCLA does. (they also have haas, which i presume also does econ)

you’ll probably be good at either university.

Yes, both UCLA and Berkeley are great choices but it’s very competitive to transfer into.

Based on the fact that it’s so competitive, could I get some insight on the economics programs at the other UCs?

UCLA is top notch, but I’d have to say Cal. Laura Tyson trumps Sharpe.

UC Merced is the best.

Seriously though, if you’re choosing a university based on our opinions of their departments, then you’re pretty dumb.

Look into it yourself. Research. Investigate. Other words that mean the same.

UCSD’s Econ Dept is up there with UCLA’s. Distinguished faculty, undergrad research opportunities, and some really tough classes.

don’t know how true this is. Sharpe’s notoriously famous for saying that he learned how to think like an economist at UCLA. Berkeley has a ton of nobel laureates in econ though, so as i said, they’re both good.

byphy,

Purely subjective on my part. Laura Tyson – Chair of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers – is a hero of mine.
