best undergrad major for cardiology?

hello. this is a post for my friend who does not have a CC account nor does she want one. She just had a question. She wants to know, is nutrition a good undergrad major if she wants to do cardiology? she wants to know how is the coursework? Do med schools like nutrition majors? etc. She says thanks!

You do not “do cardiology” or any other specialty in med school. That comes afterwards in a residency. Tell her to get the highest GPA possible and to prep for the MCAT.

Cardiology is actually a sub specialty of internal medicine so you don’t start specializing in it until 11 years after you graduate high school.

There is no undergrad that is best for cardiology.

Since UG does not prepare for Med. School, any major will do.

My dad is a cardiologist and according to him electrical engineering majors make great cardiologists (but you should major in this only if you can get good grades - it is an extremely difficult major!).

I was in electrical engineering and my H. is anelectrical engineer. I am not sure if concepts of electrical circuits have much to do with all this technology. D. mentioned that physics is important for heart/lungs and Gen. Chem. for kidney studies. However, you cannot prepare for any medical specialty in UG. Just relax, enjoy your college…

Exactly. It’s been at least a half century that students have prepared themselves for medical school by studying the prerequisites: Biology, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Physics and some of them have even become cardiologists and nephrologists.
