So I go to a huge but no name university in the midwest (see if you can guess from my username)
Anyway Ive completed 1.5 years of engineering classes and have a 4.0 with 35 credits earned. I want to apply to a more prestigious university but really have no idea what I should realistically expect. I have excellent teacher recs btw if that matters. I just have no idea how much my disastrous high school record will hold me back. (3.4 GPA)
Im looking for an engineering school, preferably in the Midwest but really anywhere it fine. I just dont really know what to expect in my position, what should my targets be? Wisconsin? Minnesota? UofM?
I started looking into Illinois and Purdue and apparently they both dont allow transfers for mechanical engineers… grrrrrr…
I go to Grand Valley State University by the way (I told you guys nobody has ever heard of it even though theres 25,000 students)
@laker4444 Maybe USC, UT Austin or UC Berkeley, too. I don’t think they require your high school record or they don’t regard it if you have over a certain number of units.
Thanks I checked USC and Berkeley and I think you need 60 credits but UT Austin look great!
Your in-state flagship, which will probably be less expensive than many out-of-state public universities.
How much concern is cost?
It does depend on the school you’re applying to in regards to if they may want your high school transcript. Since I applied to a university awhile back, I was not required to disclose it because I had more than 30 transferable credits. Than again I’m in NC and it may vary from state to state.
Kinda in-topic, do any of you guys know what is a good GPA for OOS transfer to Civil Engineer at UT Austin?
3.69 overall but only the rate for out-of-state applicants is only 27%
Any more suggestions guys? I have worked my a** off for two years to get a 4.0 so I can transfer to a better school, I want to know the best school I should be aiming for
Of course people here have hears of GVSU.
You have several other excellent universities in MI. Start with them.
Where do graduates from GVSU find internships and jobs after graduation? Spend some time at the career canter on campus, and chatting with faculty in your department. Your future may not be as bleak as you think if you end up having to stay there through graduation.
Vanderbilt could be on your radar. I was recently accepted despite my poor high school record (3.3) and I’m fairly certain they have a good engineering program.
UMichigan is world class in engineering obit should be your primary target.
You should focus on your in-state public options and then some private engineering schools. Check out some of the smaller AITU (http://theaitu.org) schools which offer good transfer financial aid.
Thanks looking into RPI right now. I’ll have to look more into this financial aid options.
