I need some university suggestions. I have pretty good stats… 2200 SAT, 3.86 GPA. But, I really, really want to stay in the states I mentioned. I want to go to a top university that is in any of the four following states: Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, or Mississipi. I live in one of these states and I do not want to go far from my parents. I am interested maybe in bio or english… but not engineering… physics is not my thing. Can anyone please suggest one or two universities that I could look into. What is, academically, prestige wise and reputation wise, the best university that is located in these states? Thank you so much!

Emory would be the most prestigious in these states and strong in bio and English. However, I’d suggest you seriously consider the University of Alabama. You would get a generous merit scholarship there, and UAB is heavily involved and well known in science research. Also, UGA is pretty good too.

Thank you for the suggestions so far. How does Emory compare to top schools across the nation? Does University of Alabama compare to top schools? I want to know whether restricting myself within a certain location will affect the quality of education I receive.

Whoops, I meant UAB as in their medical school, which many people are surprised to know is well ranked by US News and has a lot of research activity.

Emory is considered one of the best schools in the nation. It has less name recognition nationwide compared to the lower Ivies because it’s in the South and not the Northeast. Alabama is known on CC for its generous merit aid, and I would regard it as a hidden gem/up and coming school.

Thankyou schrizto. Also, I would say that my parents are pretty well off so they will be able to afford 50 k or so per year towards my education. So money won’t be a big factor. Right now, my biggest concern is attending the best academic institution I can with my stats and location restrictions.

What about schools in North Carolina? North Carolina’s much closer to South Carolina than Mississippi is. They have Duke, UNC-CH, and Wake Forest. IMO Duke is the most prestigious university in the South.

In South Carolina, USC-Columbia is actually an extremely good value and a fine school. Dont overlook it. Don’t be sucked into the prestige game, as in USNWR rankings. That is superficial.

Go where your heart is, and perhaps where the best scholarship is.

For private schools in South Carolina, I recommend highly Furman, Presbyterian College and Wofford College.

U of Alabama at Birmingham has one of the best Biology and Life Sciences programs in the southeast. While much of the attention goes to graduate studies and research at the UAB medical/health sciences center (and lots of federal grant money, too) the undergraduate Biology department has an excellent reputation.

Incidentally, don’t confuse U of Alabama-Tuscaloosa with UAB. Totally separate and totally different. I think that UAB is a somewhat independent organ of the UA system, while UA-Tuscaloosa is the state flagship campus in the U of A system.

i dont know why you have chosen those states in particular, but to stay in the “southeast” you should be considering Emory, Vanderbilt, Duke, and possibly UNC Chapel Hill as the 4 best universities. If you are looking for a smaller college, there are some around your area as well (davidson in NC, etc)
Try to refine your search a little, because some people would thrive at UGA while others would be better off at Emory.

Emory IS a top school. Of those 4 states, Emory is the best, hands down, no comparison.

If you are determined to be in the south but are willing to go beyond those 4 states, others have suggested opening it up to North Carolina (Duke, UNC, Davidson) and Tennessee (Vanderbilt) but I might also suggest Tulane (Louisiana) as a thought.

Well I talked to my parents and we decided I would try and get into a good uni in those states…that’s pretty much my reasoning for grouping those together. Is Emory the only top uni in those states? :S I might have to expand my location a bit. perhaps NC.

Don’t forget Texas! There’s Rice, UT, etc. In NC, there’s UNC, Elon (I think), Davidson, etc.
I forget where Suwanee is, but that’s supposed to be a great school (University of the South).

Out of the states you mentioned, there is Emory in pretty much a league of its own. Then UGA… U. of Alabama… consider some other states. Only Emory seems to be a fitting school in those states.

Depends on your definition of “top.” Emory is definitely the most prestigious school in the states you listed; Georgia Tech is somewhere behind that (but you’ve said you don’t want to study engineering, so that’s out), and next would come UGA, Clemson, and Auburn, in that order. There is a significant gap, however, between each of the schools on this list.

If you expand your options to include North Carolina, others have already pointed out Duke, UNC-CH, Wake Forest, and Davidson as good schools in that state. I would rank all of those above UGA, and Duke above Emory.
