Best wishes for all my east coast friends!

I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you! I can’t believe the number of people in the path of this hurricane! 65 MILLION! Be safe everyone!

DD just got to Boston two days ago to start graduate school. We talked to her yesterday evening and she said she’d been out to buy water, protein bars, an umbrella (forgot to take one from home) and a flashlight. I sure wish this storm gave some indication of turning in the other direction but, according to the Weather Channel, that’s not going to happen. I’ll be thinking of everyone in the path of the storm and keeping them in my prayers.

We are in the middle of NC and we probably won’t get any rain, but I am thinking of all the people in the path of this very large storm. Everyone stay safe and be cautious From the looks of the radar, this is not being over-hyped! YIKES!

Left our eastern NC home this afternoon to escape Irene. We’re mostly worried about trees falling on our house. We got our boat out of the water and on dry land.
MIL and SIL stayed at their home on the Outer Banks. Refused to leave…ugh.
S2 stayed at his nearby eastern NC college. Said he and roommates had been shopping for storm provisions. DH says he hopes they bought something besides beer
S1 (U.S. Navy) lives in Va. Beach on the Chesapeake Bay. Haven’t heard from him today. Will call tomorrow. Ugh…too much to worry about

Trying to get my D back to Boston College in time for her TA training this Wednesday. Southwest doesn’t have any flights between now and then from Souther CA, so I booked a flight with another airline. It cost an additional $500, but I’m still feeling so much more fortunate than those living on the east coast right about now.

I just saw a little while ago that downtown Charleston is flooded. Does anyone know anything more? My son lives in Mount Pleasant just on the other side of the Cooper River (and very close to the river - first turning when you come off the Sailboat abridge). Don’t want to call him as he has to be up at 4 a.m. tomorrow. He wasn’t expecting to be affected. He just moved there a few months ago. I would sure hate for his new furniture to be all ruined before he has even finished paying for it :(

D1 was suppose to fly back to NY today, but the flight was canelled late last night. I was the first person she called when it happened. She was with all trainees at a bar celebrating their last night in London. Apparently every female trainee called their parents and rescheduled their flights, but male trainees just kept on drinking and figured they would deal with it later. Must be this male/female thing.

I am actually happy D1 will not be in NYC by herself (roommate went home to NJ) with no emergency items. Hopefully things will be back to normal on Mon.

Stay safe everyone.

Here in southern coastal CT it really is the calm before the storm. I went outside this morning and it was eerily quiet, not a whisp of breeze. The animals know something is up as I usually see lots of chipmunks and squirrels but this morning not one was to be found. I guess all that is left to do is wait.

I was in the last large NE hurricane in the eighties. That Erie quiet is definitely weird and spooky. Hoping the storm loses strength today.

PackMom, I hope your relatives fared okay. I would not want to be on the Outer Banks during this storm. I wish all of you close to the NJ shore and NYC a pleasant hunkering-down. My D’s in Boston but not near the shore; I’m hoping she at least has a plan! I’m in VT and still have 24 hours before I see how much rain and how many trees will tumble.

^^^Oh, another Vermonter (very few of us on CC)! It’ll be here tomorrow.

I’ve got a daughter (22) in Brooklyn, NY and unfortunately she is all alone this weekend as all her roomies are away, most of her other friends are away, and her boyfriend who was away and due to fly back cannot fly back. She’s out getting supplies. Hopefully she’ll have use of her cell and computer.

My dad lives near that one Navy base that put all their ships out to sea earlier this week. I asked him if he was gonna evacuate (because where he’s at their predicting 6-12 inches of rain, and he said that they were gonna try to ride it out -__-

soozie-- right now Brooklyn is pretty calm. I have a feeling it will stay that way. Try not to worry! We will almost definitely not lose power, and everything will just get wet. The media tend to make much more of it than need be. The problem was the big blizzard in December that Mayor Bloomberg under-reacted to. It’s almost certainly going to be much less of a deal than the tv is making it seem. I live in Brooklyn. If you want to pm me, I can keep you updated on how things are going, in case your daughter “forgets” to keep you up to date.

Oldfort…My son is in London as well. I am wondering if these two Cornellians are working for the same company. He will be back on Monday as well.

We’re in northern NJ.

We EXPECT to lose power, it happens with much less cause than a hurricane.
We’re prepared as much as possible.

My biggest worry is 25 yr old son who lives with us. He’s intent on (walking) into our downtown tonite to ‘pubcrawl’ with a bunch of friends. DH thinks he’ll be fine.
I’m the worrywart mom who can’t convince him of his folly.
Maybe the pubs will close down???

Best to everyone over the next few days.

icedragon, just talked to my S1 who’s a Naval officer there. One of his Navy friends has been evacuated from his apt. and is staying with S1. S1 says it blowin’ and raining hard there now. Meanwhile, he and friends are cooking up a hurricane party to pass the time. Maybe your S can join them musicmom!

Eastern NC is getting blasted. Many towns are under water.
S2 (in college there) has no power with roads flooding and trees falling. He said his backyard looks like a jungle.
Our pier at our river house is normally three feet above the water. It is now at least four feet under water…a seven foot rise since we left yesterday afternoon.

MIL at the OBX (Kitty Hawk) has not lost her electricity yet but the worst of the storm hasn’t passed her yet.

Thanks, franglish. I really do think my D will be OK alone in Brooklyn. As long as she has cell service or computer and can stay in touch, it’ll be fine I think. It hasn’t even started yet and she has been in touch twice today (unfortunately, my cell does not get reception where I live (ever) and so we can’t use text). I’m not on twitter but she recently joined it ( I think more for her career stuff than anything) but I can read it online and I saw she posted that Brooklyn was sold out of flashlights and she had to buy candles. I emailed her that I am sure we gave her a flashlight back a long time ago when she moved in but her belongings are not, well, organized, but I told her where I bet one would be, and she wrote back…“I found my flashlight and don’t believe everything you read on twitter!!” (she must have realized I had read it!)…said she got lots of food and water and went to a yoga class. I am sure she is calm (though I can’t imagine her liking being in the dark all alone…). Her biggest fret honestly is that her big concert Monday night still happens (this is a concert to coincide with the release of her debut CD) and just hope the subways are running by then. She will be hugely disappointed if it can’t happen.

In any case, should I lose contact with her, I know I can reach you in Brooklyn. That’s hoping that I don’t lose power in Vermont of course as it is heading this way tomorrow.

Inland CT here…it has been raining most of the day. I don’t believe this is hurricane weather…yet…it’s some other front moving through. The ground is soaked and the danger we have is that trees will more easily become uprooted.

Franglish…I hope you are right…that this is an “overreaction” but I suspect this is going to cause more wind/rain combination than we southern new england folks usually see…and subsequent problems.

Momma-three, that would be funny. If your son’s training class in NYC is cancelled, then yes. D1 just heard she has next week off to study for her series 7 and time to put her apartment together now.

@soozievt: By Monday night everything should be totally back to normal. Best to your daughter with her concert!
