so what is the best work-study job on campus? which is the best-paying? when should i start applying for these?

I was wondering too…

Finding an off-campus, non-profit org to work for (that you enjoy, of course) would be the best one.

I got a little over 2 grand in work-study, but I dunno what to do for it. What kind of things do we have to do?
Also, how do we sign up/apply for the PLUS student and parent loans from the government and ****? I heard we need to do it b4 july 1 or interest rates go up more than 2%!!!

Yeah I’ve heard something similar too, also there was something on tritonlink about “consolidating” your loans before june 30.What does “consolidating” your loans mean?

Don’t know about what TritonLink said, but it’s probably because on July 1, student loan interest rates will go up and it’s not going to be a pretty sight.

So YIKES!

are there a lot of job opportunities around sd?
do u guys recommend work-study first year in college?

<<< Finding an off-campus, non-profit org to work for (that you enjoy, of course) would be the best one.>>>>>

Just wondering…

Is it worth the gas money and time to drive out of UCSD to find an off-campus job?

<is it=“” worth=“” the=“” gas=“” money=“” and=“” time=“” to=“” drive=“” out=“” of=“” ucsd=“” find=“” an=“” off-campus=“” job?=“”></is>

not really because there are plenty of jobs on campus and at local biotech, TSRI, Salk institute, hospitals, and other places close by – all within 5-30 minutes walking time (and even quicker if you have a bike) – plus who needs a car when you have free buses and shuttles? – usually people find off-campus job if it is something more specialized, like they want to work at a pharmacy but all neighboring pharmacies do not accept interns or all internships are already filled in – or they found this great engineering internship or whatever

i never really understood how work-study is an award (would anyone care to enlighten me?) - i think whoever devised it just wanted to make people with loans feel better about being in debt – the only benefit you get out of it is that some jobs are open ONLY to work-study students – so when you’re applying for them the competition you face cuts 2/3rds – but i’ve never had work-study and i’ve never had any trouble finding a job on or near campus – and then they basically call your hard-earned money “award money” as if you’re getting it in some kind of exceptional way, while it is simply the procuct of hours you worked and your hourly wage

work-study jobs are usually the lowest paid and the most low-skill jobs – like if you want to get a job that pays more than an $8/hour at local industry, there are no more positions denoted as work-study so the full competition begins

good ones, in my opinion, would include working at a gym or library – cuz i’ve seen those guys just study/socialize during their work hours – some of the less desirable ones would be working as a cashier or working at a cafeteria – these kind of jobs demand that you are very attentive and constantly doing something – so you are more tired afterwards and less fit for doing something that requires attention once again, like reading or studying – bookstore also wants to see you working to your fullest – like they would make their employees pester the passersby with questions, so you’d be basically working as a sales rep – tutoring is probably ok, but for some positions you’ll need a car to drive to some location to tutor kids – it is probably more desirable as you can put tutoring on your resume as community service, while working as cashier is not community service material

some of the lab student assistant/helper positions are open solely for work-study - TSRI labs especially want to recruit work-studies - but if they cannot find someone with work-study, they grant jobs to students without it

Who do we talk to about applying for student PLUS loans and **** before the JULY 1 cutoff?

I haven’t received any confirmation of my financial aid status…
