Best/Worst Admission/Rejection Letters

got a waitlist letter from Providence College…someone else’s name and address on it…how rude! When they (admissions)were called they said they’d send out another letter, wouldn’t answer when asked if applicant was admitted or waitlisted too. Eventually waitlisted. Needless to say, withdrew from waitlist. After putting all that effort into application, it’s very insulting when school couldn’t be bothered to double check the letters going out.

WUSTL’s rejection was damn curt.

Wow, that’s… something.

Oh my gosh - this actually made me laugh out loud. I hope enough time has passed that you find it funny too.

What is the best thing a parent did when YOU were accepted or rejected?

It has always been funny. I actually taped the letter on the outside of my office door, and highlighted the key passage. I could hear people laughing through my closed door as they stopped to read it.

Purdue sends you a bunch of letters, booklets, and even some posters. Yesterday I got a poster that said, " My Name" is a boilermaker. Boiler Up! In huge gold letters on a black background. Others I got were pretty generic.

University of Delaware sends their acceptance letters in big yellow envelopes with “CONGRATULATIONS!” written in giant, shiny blue letters. It definitely catches your attention when sorting through the mail.

UConn’s acceptance letter was really nice, I thought. They made note of saying “You have been selected from one of the strongest applicant pools in UConn history,” which I believe because of their 21% increase in apps this year!

The package itself wasn’t anything fancy, just a white folder with the letter and a deposit envelope inside.

Really curious about the ones I’m gonna receive!

Northeastern’s rejection was pretty standard, didn’t say much beyond the traditional “Many qualified students applied this year and we can only accept so many etc, etc”.

Belmont University’s packet was pretty nice. No hat or t-shirt or anything, but a folder with the letter “Congratulations!!” housing info, financial info, the deposit sheet/survey and a DVD featuring a campus tour, everything you could possibly want to know and the school’s President welcoming you. I was definitely pleased!

Still waiting to hear from UMass Amherst, Vanderbilt and Tufts. I have a feeling the latter two can only end in heartache… any clue if they at least let you down easy?

I love love love this thread.

UofArizona’s acceptance was rather blaaah, It was a little cardboard cut out thing that said accepted, and a standard acceptance letter. 2 grand and Macbook. Oh the envelope just just UofAccepted! It was cute-ish.

Kent State- Standard, blah blah blah, But they accepted me without even having to pay for the deposit.

Parsons the New School for Design!
EA. Obviously I’m biased, because I’m going there. But it was a simple little package, my acceptance letter, which was totally sweet, kind of bragging about the school a bit, but it was hand signed by the vice president, which made me feel totally special. It came with a cute little book mark about what I need to do to enroll and stuff.

SUNY Binghamton, definitely, has one of the most disparaging and vapid rejection EMAIL I have ever seen; I actually think the email was quite disrespectful, and could have been written by a high schooler, since I don’t see much difference in the content.

March 14, 2011

Dear XXXX

We sincerely regret to inform you that you were not selected for admission to
Binghamton University. We received an extraordinary number of applications
and this made admissions decisions very difficult. You have significant
accomplishments but unfortunately, we are unable to offer you a space at this
time.

You are a talented student and we appreciate your interest in attending
Binghamton University. If you still have a desire to attend Binghamton in the

All admissions decisions are final and reflect a thorough application review by
the admissions committee, including the option to be considered for all schools
and programs within Binghamton.

Best wishes with your college plans and studies.

Hello! I’m brand new to College Confidential.

I applied for three colleges (on my father’s wishes, not mine) and have heard back from all.
Acceptances:
University of North Texas
University of Texas at Arlington

Rejection:
International Christian University

The UNT letter was pretty informal and nothing fancy about it. It even said “acceptance notice” on the envelope. I got UTA’s acceptance notice on a post card believe it or not.

ICU was my first choice and the rejection was pretty harsh. The letter itself wasn’t that mean (“We regret to inform you that your application was not successful”) but it was in a tiny envelope placed in a large, certified mail envelope. I was so excited to get it until I opened it up and saw a tiny envelope instead of an acceptance package. :/

UCI sent an email that said “your application status has changed”. I got it during my 5th period class and spent the next half hour freaking out about what my password was to their website. I finally figured out what it was and logged on. Our computers are suuuuupper slow, and waiting was torture, but seeing the words “You have been admitted to UC Irvine!” in nice, cursive, italicised letters made up for it.

UCDavis sent me an email with the title as CONGRATULATIONS! I appreciated that it was the title of the email so I could skip the superflous paragraphs that followed it. Then they sent a postcard-like thing a couple of weeks later.

St. John’s acceptance letter sucked. But the full tuition scholarship for 4 years made up for it. :]

If I was on an adcom, I’d fill all the rejection letters with spiders.

hundreds and hundreds of spiders.

University of Washington’s acceptance letters are in the mail; I received one today!! Borring letter but a yes.

Macaulay Honors College at City College was not my first choice. However, I still wished for an acceptance letter from it because of the free tuition, laptop, etc.

My family is unable to pay for any school so this was Macaulay was probably the most important college for me to be accepted to.

My mom was hospitalized and my life seem to spiral down. However, I got a letter from Macaulay. I was able to go to college now…for free. My mom who gave up her life in Korea to allow me to study here was finally able to send me to college. She cried. My dad who I never saw show emotion cried. This was their “most precious gift.”

Believe it or not, this letter allowed my mom to fight through her illness so she can live to see more of my brother’s and my days. She is better now and will be cured.

Thank God for this letter.

My acceptance letter from New Paltz wasn’t very personal, but it was extremely sweet. I applied through EOP, and one paragraph really made the entire letter:

“SUNY New Paltz is the college of choice for many outstanding students. We receive over 3,500 applicants for our EOP freshman class of 125. The selection process is competitive as we seek to enroll those students who will best benefit from the opportunities offered through EOP and New Paltz… You and your family should be very proud that you are among those chosen to join our EOP family.”

I felt extremely lucky after reading that. It was like I had won the lottery! It was the sweetest, most heartfelt thing I have ever read. It was like the EOP director was writing to his own family member. I’ve been re-reading the letter ever since I received it this afternoon, and the magic still hasn’t gone away. =)

I got an early acceptance from Mo Ho today (snuck on the website, since they didn’t email me anything.)
