I hate short rejections. =( At least give me something longer to read while I wallow in tears…

Dickinson SUCKS. ><

Dear littlemonsterr:
The Admissions Committee has completed its review of your Regular Decision application and after
much deliberation has determined that we are unable to offer you admission to Dickinson College for
fall 2011.

Please know that this was not an easy decision for members of the committee to make. We appreciate
the investment of time and thought you put into your application. We know this is a disappointment but
feel it is in your best interest to learn this decision now so you can continue making plans for next year.

Good luck, and thank you again for your interest in Dickinson.

Best wishes,
Stephanie Balmer
Dean of Admissions

Chicago’s waiting list

Dear daniriv12,

Thank you for applying to the University of Chicago. The Admissions Committee has reviewed your application, and due to the large number of highly qualified applicants to the Class of 2015, we regret that we are unable to offer you admission at this time. However, given your impressive accomplishments – both academic and extra-curricular – we would like to offer you a place on our waiting list.

While we are currently unable to offer you admission, we recognize and commend your academic and personal achievements. This year’s applicant pool was the largest and most competitive in the university’s history, with many highly qualified applicants for a limited number of spaces. As a result, we found ourselves in the difficult position of being unable to offer admission to every worthy applicant.

Should space become available later in the spring, we will revisit the files of students who have accepted a place on the waiting list. If you would like to be considered for admission at that time, please reply with our waitlist response form. If you would like to provide any additional information to the committee, you may update your file in your UChicago Account or by fax at 773.702.8599.

Thank you again for your patience and continued interest in UChicago. If you have any questions about your status, please contact… herpderp bla bla

what is my chance of getting acceptance to ucsb, ucsc, and ucmerced with 2.7 gpa ?

I don’t think this is the right place to post “chance me” messages.
Thanks.

KU sent me a very delightful acceptance package/email! I love the way the University of Kansas is ran!

Hi well I recieved my furman acceptance letter a few days ago and I thought it was nice and sweet. They wrote :

"Dear XXXXX,

It is a privilege to inform you that the Admission Committee of Furman
University has approved your application for admission, and you are invited to
enroll in Fall 2011. You have been carefully selected for your outstanding
academic and leadership achievement, as well as your potential to be an
integral part of our special community, and I congratulate you on this
important milestone.

Choosing Furman will provide you with one of the most engaging academic
experiences of your life, an education in the liberal arts that will prepare
your mind for success in any field. Furman also will enrich your character
through a wide-ranging offering of extracurricular activities that allows you
to explore interests outside of the classroom, to strengthen your capacity for
leadership, and to build lifelong friendships."

but my muhlenberg rejection was a tad bit harsh…
they wrote

"Dear XXXXX
A large and very well-qualified applicant pool has made this year’s selection process particularly difficult and competitive. The Admissions Committee has completed its review of your credentials and regrets to inform you that we cannot approve your application for admission to Muhlenberg College. Please be assured that all facets of your application were given careful and individual consideration before this decision was reached.

I know this may come as disappointing news, and I want you to know that often the decisions we reach are not unanimous. Often there is quite a bit of discussion, some of it even heated, as we try to reach decisions about the fit between Muhlenberg and each applicant. Ive always felt badly that students frequently simply receive that thin envelope, but never know that they had advocates on the staff, or that the decision was difficult and arrived at only after significant conversation.

Sometimes students will ask us, What can I do to eventually become a student at Muhlenberg? My advice is to start somewhere else, strengthen your academic record, and then consider us as a transfer destination. There are a number of students at Muhlenberg right now who followed thisroute because they were determined to ultimately be a Muhlenberg student."

I was totally shocked by this. I mean Furman’s a better school and tougher to get into and my reach school, where as Muhlenberg was my target. I was fine with the rejection except for the end when they wrote, “My advice is to start somewhere else, strengthen your academic record, and then consider us as a transfer destination”. Like really why did they have to add that. They should have ended the letter with we wish you success, not about the transferring bit. I got into a school harder to get into and they tell me I’m not good enough.I really want to email them and say HAH you missed you I got into a school that is considered one of the best liberal arts colleges where as yours barely makes the list, but i think that would be rude haha. If only I could say that it would make my day.

The UChicago one was adorable, I found. A lot nicer than the ones I’ve seen in earlier years of this thread. They emphasised that they could SEE me at the school, which was nice.

The UMich one I found was also really nice, a really cute video with a marching band playing in the background!

My friend had Emory send her a CONGRATS email, and she told everyone she got in and then half an hour later she got an email saying, “Sorry, we just wanted to tell you that you were missing stuff. Wrong email.” And it was her first “acceptance” too…

UCLA’s acceptance package has the letter of acceptance and then the packet with other papers regarding freshman admission. On the front of the packet it has one word: Welcome.

I liked American U’s acceptance. It said “Congratulations” on the envelope, and there was a nice, big folder with the acceptance and financial aid letters. It also had several pages of information about American. I liked the acceptance letter itself because it essentially said, “Congratulations, you’ve been accepted! And we’d like to invite you to join the honors program! And we’re giving you this scholarship!” Made me happy.

i think all rejection letters should come with Hallmark cards that play “Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?” When you open them

UChicago’s was nice! :)

here is the first paragraph of my smith ED acceptance letter:

Dear _________,

Congratulations! I am very pleased to tell you that you have been admitted under Early Decision I to the class of 2015 at Smith College. The Smith community joins me in congratulating you on you accomplishments and on your promise for future achievement. We are delighted that you have selected Smith as your college, and we look forward to seeing you in September.

littlemonster - I hope this offers you comfort, I have NO IDEA what went on at Dickinson this year. DC has an incredibly nasty an academically unimpressive classmate that was accepted. Most of our school community is scratching their head on how that happened.

The Marines will send you a tee shirt BEFORE you even apply! :-)

UMass’s was great
they sent me the letter with a file!
penn state’s was very small… If i didn’t know I got accepted I would’ve thought it was a rejection letter…

@carasmom,

Thank you! It does make me feel a bit better, though it wasn’t my “dream” school or anything I still thought I had a pretty good shot at getting accepted. I was actually planning on attending if I did receive an acceptance. Now I’m not really sure what to do …

MIT rejection letter:

Dear ________,

The Admissions Committee has completed its review of your application, and I am so sorry to tell you that we are unable to offer you admission to MIT.

Please understand that this is in no way a judgment of you as a student or as a person, since our decision has more to do with the applicant pool than anything else - many of our applicants are not offered admission simply because we don’t have enough space in our entering class. This year we had nearly 18,000 candidates for fewer than 1,800 offers of admission, from which will come our 1,100 freshmen. Since all of our decisions are made at one time and all available spaces have been committed, all decisions are final.

I am very sorry to bring you this disappointing news, and I wish you the very best as you continue with your education.

Sincerely,

Stuart Schmill
Dean of Admissions
