Best/Worst Admission/Rejection Letters

I think it might be just you, since you asked. This is a great school and many people would be excited to receive this letter from them.

USC’s was the best. They shipped through courier. On one of the flaps, it said ‘We chose you because…’ and when you lift it up, you’ll see that it says ‘You belong at USC’. Rather cheesy but I was so insanely happy when I saw that (:

Wish I could say the same for UCLA but the actual package didn’t even come - it got lost in the mail and wasn’t registered so yeah I never got it. Emailed the office and they said to refer to my online acceptance letter haha. And if I really want, I can just request for another one to be mailed but I decided not to put a further strain on the UC budget and did not request for another one. Heh.

Harvard’s was pretty generic.

Dear __________

I am delighted to inform you that the Committee on Admissions and Financial Aid has voted to offer you a place in the Harvard Class of 2015. In accordance with Harvard tradition, a certificate of admission is enclosed. Please accept my personal congratulations for your outstanding achievements. This year nearly thirty-five thousand students, a record number, applied for admission to the entering class. Faced with many more talented and highly qualified candidates than it had room to admit, the Admissions Committee took great care to choose individuals with exceptional character as well as unusual academic and extracurricular strengths. The Committee is convinced that you will make important contributions during your college years and beyond. Our faculty and students extend a special invitation for you to visit Cambridge over the next few weeks. If you feel a visit would be helpful in making your final college choice, we hope you will take advantage of this opportunity. An invitation is enclosed.

We need to know by May 1 whether or not you plan to accept our offer of admission. You may respond online at https://admapp.admissions.fas.harvard.edu/hanevo/</a> accepted-haServices.do or you may fill out and return the enclosed postcard. If you accept admission for this coming August, further information will be sent to you over the summer by the Freshman Dean’s Office. For nearly two generations we have encouraged students to consider deferring entrance for a year. Many students have done so, finding their varied experiences extremely rewarding and their subsequent college careers greatly enriched. If you would like to defer, please inform us of your intention by logging in to the online response website (above) to register your deferral. More information about deferring admission can be found at http://www.admissions.college. harvard.edu/apply/time_off/ .

Among the enclosed materials you will find a final School Report Form, which must be completed by your school counselor and returned to us at the end of this academic year. The Committee on Admissions reserves the right to withdraw its offer of admission under certain conditions described on the postcard enclosed for your response. We have a longstanding commitment to meet the financial needs of our admitted students. Our recently enhanced financial aid program is devoted to making the College fully accessible to all students of promise, and we have a firm policy of making supportive offers of need-based financial aid. We encourage you to contact us now or at any time during your years here if you have questions or concerns about financial aid or if you have additional information that might be helpful to us in understanding your family’s financial circumstances. I very much hope that you will decide to join us at Harvard. We have enclosed materials about Harvard’s opportunities which might be helpful to you in making your college choice. Whatever your decision may be, you have my best wishes for every future success.

Sincerely, William R. Fitzsimmons Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid

As was Yale’s

Congratulations on your admission to the Yale College Class of 2015! You have every reason to feel proud of your accomplishments, and it gives me great pleasure to send you this letter. On the folder that holds your admissions materials you will find Yale’s motto “Lux et Veritas,” or, in English, “Light and Truth.” Etched into the official Yale seal, this motto has guided Yale students, faculty, and alumni in their pursuit of knowledge and leadership for over three hundred years. We hope that you will choose to join this remarkable community, and we look forward to celebrating your unique contribution to the University’s traditions, life, and mission. We also hope that you will come to campus for Bulldog Days, our overnight program for admitted students. The events scheduled on April 13th, 14th and 15th will provide an exciting introduction to academic and residential life at Yale. I strongly encourage you to come for any or all aspects of Bulldog Days, even if you have already visited Yale. You will get to meet the classmates who will be your companions for the next four years and to explore with them the endless resources and opportunities that await you as Yale students. To register for Bulldog Days and also to make connections with other admitted students, please visit our admitted student website at admits.yale.edu. You may reply to our offer of admission by clicking the “Reply Online” link above. While the final Candidate’s Reply Date is May 1, we would be happy to hear from you as soon as you have come to a firm decision about your plans for next year. Finally, if you have any general or specific questions about Yale, or if you would like to arrange a campus visit at a time outside of Bulldog Days, feel free to email us at bulldog@yale.edu. I am delighted, both for you and for the College, at the prospect that you will join us in the fall. Welcome to Yale!

Sincerely,
Jeffrey Brenzel, Dean of Undergraduate Admissions

Harvard could probably do worse than Princeton’s acceptance letter and still have most people bouncing off the walls with glee. Not that Princeton’s is bad…it’s just in a category of it’s own (as seen on a copy of a friend’s). Congratulations to you captainoats if you’re the one who got in! ^_^

Thanks chewydog, though now for the decision (that’s gonna get its own thread despite the tons of Harvard v Yale threads already in existence)…

From the University of Hong Kong

I am pleased to inform you that the Arts Faculty Admissions Committee will offer you a place in the first year of the BA curriculum, subject to your providing evidence that you have satisfied the following entrance requirements:

1. The US High School Graduation Diploma; and
2. Passes in five Grade 12 courses, provided that at least 70% is achieved in each of these courses

Blah blah blah. As you can see from the requirements, it’s just the standard spiel: Don’t flunk out of high school (like any American colleges would imply). They underlined-bolded SUBJECT. Right after telling me that I’m in. British wannabes. And I say this as a Cantonese. I can’t stand their tone either in their e-mail or in this letter, for instance. Perhaps I’m too American for them, having been educated in the American curriculum, but I’m totally unused to this tone I get from them all the time, and not just in this letter.

If it’s Harvard vs Yale, I would say Yale, but I’m just a little voice in your head, lols.

I chose Yale by the way.

Sent from my Desire HD using CC App

Oooh, nice! I’m very happy for you captainoats because getting into any Ivy is pretty hard and I know you got into at least 2. I’m glad you chose Yale. Perhaps, if my little voice works, I should try persuading people into giving me free food.

I love this topic and since i have received a couple of acceptances so far i figured i would share how they were, and I know Im not the only person so tell us how your college admission packages are!

Xavier- Nice packet full of information, Scholarship didnt hurt

This is the University of Chicago online acceptance:

Dear headedintoLatium,

Congratulations! It is my great pleasure to inform you that you have been admitted to the University of Chicago, Class of 2016. With your exceptional academic record, strong voice, and impressive accomplishments, you have distinguished yourself in the University’s largest and most competitive Early Action pool to date.

For over a century, the College’s academic tradition has thrived because of students like you who crave ideas that captivate, ideas that provoke and transform. We imagine you in our laboratories and on our performance stages, in our libraries and on our athletic fields, immersed in your passions and learning about the challenges that make knowledge worthwhile. As part of our residential house system, you will cultivate friendships that endure; in our classrooms, you will create and inhabit a vibrant intellectual space with your peers and professors.

Join us in April for one of our Admitted Student Open Houses, at which you’ll experience firsthand our rich community of scholars, friends, and neighbors. We look forward to receiving your reply as soon as you are ready but no later than May 1, 2012.

We invite you to be part of a school with a glorious history and an exciting present. We look to you to help us grow, to grow with us, and to be part of a tradition that elevates us all.

Sincerely,

James G. Nondorf
Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid

I’ll post what the actual package is like once I get it :)

The Johns Hopkins rejection letter which came in the mail was absolutely pathetic. It made me want to burst into tears and laughter at the same time. It was the thinnest envelope I had ever seen, as if they purposely flattened it in order to let you know that you 100% got rejected. Once opened, it was one thin peice of paper that just babbled on thanking you for applying. Then, in a short paragraph it says you were rejected. Then is babbles on about your potential.

My son received a lovely acceptance letter from DePauw. The Director of Admissions praised his personal essay and stated he was a fan of his writing. They also sent a beautiful information folder.

uga has fireworks on the screen AND sent me a free class of 2016 tshirt!!! :)

SUNY Stony Brook sent the acceptance letter in a kinda small rectangular envelope that said “Small Envelope, Big News”. It didn’t ruin anything though because I had already found out online. The letter itself was really nice - nice folder, description of campus, etc. . .

The Harvard deferral letter came in a normal sized envelope and started like this:

“THe Committee on Admissions has completed its 2011 Early Action meetngs. After careful discussion, we were unable to take a definitite action on your application and have deferred making a decision at this time.”

I kinda prefer it to be direct. I just want to know, dammit.
Unfortunately, I somehow can’t FIND my deferral/acceptance emails.

^ the UGA one sounds awesome! That’s how they all should be.

Northwestern sent out a pretty cold rejection letter imo, especially cold as it was to the early decision denials.

Indiana’s was pretty nice because I got a few scholarships from out of the blue haha!

Now I’ll just have to wait on UIUC, Wisconsin, USC, UCLA, Berkeley, UCD, UCSB, and McGill…hopefully some good news from all of them hahaha

Howard University, they rejected me before receiving my full application (Professor recommendation and second transcript)

Sent from my PC36100 using CC App

These are awful.

Case Western’s was pretty average, but I got a free t-shirt and the shirt was pretty nice actually.
