Better to send colleges 30 ACT, 1400 SAT or both?

My class of '17 D is at the point in the process where we have to make some decisions about which scores to send where. She has a 30 ACT from one sitting and a super-scored 1400 SAT from two sittings.

I used the CB concordance table which shows her “new” SAT 1400 equivalent to an “old” SAT 1990/2400 or 1340/1600. It shows an ACT equivalent of 30. She did the SAT essay once and got a 15.

Between the unknowns of the new SAT and the low essay score, I’m inclined to only send the ACT score. A few of her schools say they plan on using the CB concordance and at least one says it will consider the old and new SAT’s to be equivalent for now. I’m not sure if this should factor into my decision.

Thoughts?

Is her single-sitting best SAT much worse than a 1400?

My gut reaction to these situations with the new SAT is that if your rSAT and ACT supposedly concord to about the same score, I’d report the ACT. It’s a “known quantity” and you don’t have to worry about how the schools will perceive it or concord it (and in your case, superscore it).

Many students only send ACT or SAT, so don’t feel like she will be unusual only reporting one test.

@flatKansas, What is the “rSAT”?

Her best single sitting SAT was 1380, but that one has the low essay score and a 20 point lower math score of 710 vs. 730 (she’s going into engineering, so I assume her math score will be more important). The better math score sitting was a 1370 total. The math bit also makes me lean a bit towards ACT because her ACT math is at 98% and best SAT math at 95%.

rSAT is the revised or “new” test.

Do all your D’s schools of interest superscore? Some schools will use a single best sitting.

@snoozn

@snoozn: sorry I didn’t read the rest of your last post. Given that the highest math score AND the single-best sitting is the ACT, I’d lean toward the ACT. The superscoring gets you to 30 as well, but doesn’t give the adcoms any additional information that can help your D.

Good luck to her!
