Beware - new drug targeted at kids

I just got this from our Principal and thought I should pass it along…

A MUST READ…

New drug in Schools…

Please pass this on even if you do not have kids in school. Parents should know about this killer drug.
Grandparents, send it to your families and friends.

This is a new drug known as 'strawberry quick '.
There is a very scary thing going on in the schools right now that we all need to be aware of.

There is a type of crystal meth going around that looks like strawberry pop rocks (the candy that sizzles and ‘pops’ in your mouth). It also smells like strawberry and it is being handed out to kids in school yards. They are calling it strawberry meth or strawberry quick.

Kids are ingesting this thinking that it is candy and being rushed off to the hospital in dire condition. It may also come in chocolate, peanut butter, cola, cherry, grape and orange.

Please instruct your children not to accept candy from strangers and even not to accept candy that looks like this from a friend (who may have been given it and believed it is candy) and to take any that they may have to a teacher, principal , etc. immediately.

Pass this email on to as many people as you can (even if they don’t have kids) so that we can raise awareness and hopefully prevent any tragedies from occurring.

This is about 85% Urban Legend. See [snopes.com: Strawberry Meth](Are Drug Dealers Selling Strawberry Meth to Kids? | Snopes.com) Colored meth does exist. It’s possible (though unlikely) that some may be flavored. But there’s no evidence that any is being handed out to kids.

Everybody should bookmark snopes.com. It’s the first place to look whenever any message like this appears in your inbox.

that was my first thought too.
Around Halloween every year, various versions get trotted out.

Snopes.com:
"Claim: * Drug dealers are selling colored crystal methamphetamine known as “Strawberry Quick.”

Status: * Multiple:.
• Some drug dealers sell colored crystal methamphetamine that coincidentally resembles “Pop Rocks” or other forms of candy: * True.

• Some dealers sell crystal methamphetamine that has been flavored in order to make it more appealing to children: * False."

Here’s the thing – drug dealers are in it for the money. Little kids aren’t big cash sources. Ergo, it’s just not good business sense to target them as customers, especially when you’re selling something that will reduce the lifespan of your customer so much that they may not ever have money. (For contrast, see the marketing of cigarettes to children, which has been more successful because the targeted customers live longer into adulthood and typically smoke for decades.)

The implicit assumption in the “ohnoes, selling drugs to kids!” myth is that drug dealers are evil people trying to create a swath of destruction. While I’m sure such people exist, most drug dealers are just business people, albeit immoral/unscrupulous ones.

*Little kids aren’t big cash sources. *

no?
I am envisioning the frustrated 8 year old trying to feed a crack habit by raiding the change in the bottom of his mom’s purse.

my bad.

I fully expect a CCer to chime in any minute that their family members are regular middle class folks but their elementary school aged children always carry $50.00 on them for emergencies, because only irresponsible parents let their children walk around without cash. They’ll point out this isn’t a “rich” thing, it’s what average people do these days, and that’s why drug dealers are targeting their children.

Wait for it, I bet there’ll be one along any minute now.
