Beyond Barnes&Noble - Great Book Stores

btw, if you go to elliott bay, get a latte downstairs, they’re great

Diskovery Bookstore, Brighton, MA (recently moved from Allston). I’ve heard the new shop is similar to the old site. Piles and piles of used books precariously perched everywhere. Pulp fiction from the 1950’s to obscure college course books. Can get lost for hours in this place, never knowing what you will find.
My favorite NYC bookstore is the Strand.

True, JHS. I still have a hard time getting my mind around all these Borders Stores; I spent hours and hours at the “real” one back in school.

Farley’s Book Shop - New Hope, PA

Bunch of Grapes Bookstore - Vineyard Haven, MA (Martha’s Vineyard)

Strand - 12th and Broadway NY NY

Nicholas Hoare - Front St. Toronto

Theatre Books - St. Thomas St. Toronto

Waterstones - Piccadilly Circus, London (not small but still fun!)

There used to be a great bookstore in Merchant’s Square in Williamsburg VA but it is now the Wm. & Mary bookstore run by B&N and is not as nice.

I neglected to mention Chester County Book Co., a real find, since it’s located in a strip mall with a K-mart. http://www.ccbmc.com/

I’ll second that one nyumom. Chester County Book company is in West Chester, PA.

It would be so nice to see more links if anyone cares to add them.

City Lights in San Fran is awesome. If you’re in the DC area stop by Kramer’s. That’s a pretty cool little bookstore!

Room of One’s Own feminist books, in Madison, WI. And in another vein, Rainbow books, specializing in left politics.

In Iowa City, while en route to visit a college, our special stop was Prairie Lights. Somehow felt like a shrine.

I think that I’m going to have to bookmark this thread, because these are all such wonderful suggestions - I might just have to take a road trip to visit some of these outstanding bookstores!

I love The Toadstool in Peterborough, NH. For a small town and a small bookstore, it has always come through.

My favorite catalog for kids was Chinaberry. Time and time again they suggested books that I had just discovered or suggested books that my kids loved.

Seminary Co-op at the University of Chicago is pretty cool. They sell books that are too academic for the average reader. The Newberry Library Bookstore (one of the three bookstores in the Seminary Co-op) has a smaller collection but is charming as well. I haven’t been to the 57th Street one in Hyde Park.

There’s this used book store in Wicker Park that’s pretty cool too. The collection is impressive. Plus, they have a cat roaming around the store that adds a homey feel to the place.

Great ideas from everyone. I’m compiling the suggestions in a list by state. When the posts slowdown, I’ll post it here for all to enjoy. Good reference when traveling.

Thanks again, skiers-mom - it was a very enjoyable and informative thread- and I’ll look forward to having the compilation for reference!

Dutton’s Books (Los Angeles, Brentwood area)

The Montague Bookmill in Montague Massachusetts. It is in a wonderful old mill overlooking a waterfall. The store has a wonderful collection of used books, as well as, new books. There is a cafe in the bookstore and a terrific restaurant and a collection small stores within the mill comlpex. Any one visiting the five college area should plan a trip to the Bookmill.

Just remembered the Bookmill’s motto: “Books you don’t need in a place you can’t find.”

If you go, plan to spend a couple hours there.

Haslam’s in St. Petersburg, FL <a href=“Welcome to Haslam's Book Store”>Welcome to Haslam's Book Store;

I can’t believe I forgot the Montague Bookmill! It’s so wonderful.

I love the independent stores. New Eng Bookstore had such intelligent staff. Liberties in Ft Lauderdale. I also love specialty stores, like mystery ones. My UN was taken in honor of my mom’s friends, who had a bookstore by that name.

Mathmom’s post evoked wonderful memories of poring over the Chinaberry catalog. Lord, how I loved that company!
