big 4 vs. lockheed

I have an offer at both KPMG and lockheed.

What are the pros and cons of each?

You need to be more specific about the positions.

KPMG is an audit position. Lockheed is an account associate.

I guess my biggest question is what is more beneficial to my career and which is more family friendly.

It’s a trade off.

More beneficial to your career=KPMG
More friendly friendly=Lockheed

What is an account associate?

No idea what an “account associate” is or what it would entail on the job–that title could fall under almost any department.

Do you have a family now? If not, why not just stay at KPMG for two years or so for resume building purposes, then move to a more family-friendly firm later? Two years isn’t too long to hold off the family starting, unless you really want to or already have a family

You are a little to vague with things, but both are great brand names. KPMG will lead you down the accounting path, while Lockheed has a great Leadership Development program. If you can get into the LH program, I would go with them.

A little more color and we might be able to suggest better.

I’m in the minority here but I’d say that, as MSFHQsite said, leadership development programs are as good or potentially better than the Big 4. If you get into some of these top leadership programs like GE or other F500 companies, you will get to see a lot of different departments and will see what you truly like. Plus, once you’re done, you either get to leap people at the same company or you can move onto different companies that will clamor for your experience.

I don’t think you’re in the minority cream. I agree with you and msfhq and if I were in this position I would choose lockheed.

The LH account associate position is in the accounting department which entails compilation of financial information, journal entry processing, reconciliations and data analysis. I am also interest in the Operations, Supply Chain and Logistics side of things. Do you think there is anyway to segway across. I am an accounting major. I don’t have any family yet, but I am married and kids are in the not to distant future. My real concern is growth potential at LH.

It doesn’t sound like he would be in the leadership development group. I think KPMG would be a much better experience and lead to much better exit opportunities given the description you provided for the LH job. LH sounds like a blend between a bookkeeper and a financial analyst. I just think you will limit yourself long term if that is the work you do.

You can always move into the industry at a later date. KPMG will provide you with a broader range of experiences.

KPMG will work you harder and may put stress on your marriage if you work 60 hours some weeks (especially busy season). LH is going to be a 40-50 hour work week almost always, I would imagine.

If it isn’t the FLDP, go KPMG. If it is the FLDP, go Lockheed.
