Big Leap made in Stem Cell Research

Hey Guys! If you’ve read the Washington Post this morning, the front page of the A section had an article saying that a research team at Harvard managed to create embryonic stem cells from human skin cells.

Although this definitely does not mean that stem cell research has finished, it is certainly a gigantic step, as scientists have proven that we do not have to destroy potential life (ie embryos) to get stem cells.

I hope everyone realizes that the embryos they destroy to make stem cells are embryos that are going to be discarded by fertility clinics that made a couple pregnant and are no longer wanted. Yet people talk about having to destroy potential life, which most of the time is not the case. The two choices for most of the embryos is stem cell research or garbage, I think one choice is clealry better then the other

That’s great news!

I read something similar to this in Scientific American about a month ago-- although I believe they were just outlining a potential process and not actually describing a discovery. There is a type of enzyme in newts and similar reptiles that allows them to turn muscle cells back into stem cell. Newts have this enzyme, because this is what allows them to grow back their appendages if they happen to be severed. It’s exciting to see new advancements with a promising future!

bump…

Meshing stem cell with skin cell so the moral issue for some folks is still existent.
