Big Snowstorm Headed for Northeast

I’m home! Thank you to Bradley Airport for a clear runway. I have to say…the state/main roads on my drive home were fine. The secondary roads are very narrow, some only one lane. There isn’t school in any district around here tomorrow. I’m happy to be home!

Glad you made it home, thumper1!

Power just came back on for my sister in southern Mass!

Thumper, glad you finally made it home!

My flight to Florida took off on time and was uneventful. :)

Emily, you must be HAPPY to be in Florida!!

My friend coming home from Florida has great timing. He’ll arrive just in time for the warmer weather here. Hopefully a good chunk of the snow on his house will have melted too.

Thumper, It’s 8:30 and already 73. :)

So jealous, emilybee! I love, love, love the southwest gulf coast of Florida.

DH is usually weather tolerant, no matter how bad. This is the first winter (even before this storm,) that he siad there are limits and wouldn’t it be nice… Send us some sunny vibes, emilybee.

Now we’ve got freezing rain. AARGH. Will I ever get out of here? I’m hoping that the temp is high enough this afternoon to safely drive.

Freezing rain is the worst. I think it’s supposed to warm up, isn’t it?

Schools had 2 hour delay this morning. DD was happy to roll back into bed.

Supposed to “warm” up to 40s. Patches of snow fore casted today and rest of the week.

Emily, it’s 75 degrees in St. Pete beach. We’re off for a hike before it gets too warm! Back at home, schools are still closed. Roads are still being cleared in SW CT. Temps. are supposed to warm up in the 40’s. We were worried that we might have to clear some snow from the roof.

Freezing rain is the worst. No car, truck or SUV can ride on ice well. I’ve gotten used to the snow living here, but the ice, always makes me nervous.

It’s supposed to get to the low-40s where we are so I’d guess warmer than that in MA and RI. It’s snowing right now - big flakes and we’re getting some accumulation. Then it turns to freezing rain and then just rain when the temps are warm enough. I’m hoping that the rain washes all of the fresh snow away today. If not, then the sun coming out tomorrow should.

The likelihood of the rain today or tomorrow washing away three feet of snow, and snowbanks 10 feet high is just about zippo.

Almost all schools in CT were closed today. Clearing of secondary roads has been slow…lots of sliding around…and no place for the snow. It is rumored that many districts will not resume school until Thursday…which is very believable.

Our usually terrific snow crews usually clear during a snowfall so that that they are not faced with 3 feet…and drifts even higher…at the end. But due to the visibility and wind issues during this storm, they had to wait until the end. That meant clearing very deep snow.

Our back roads are a mess. Most are cleared to one lane in width. There are no shoulders, and huge snowbanks impeding visibility especially at corners. This stuff needs to be moved back…and it will be over the next couple of days.

I’m just looking for it to wash away the snow on the roof.

A friend at work asked me if he should clear his roof. He’s never cleared it before and hasn’t had problems. I told him that if he didn’t have problems in 2011, then he’s unlikely to have problems with this storm - the stuff in 2011 was a lot worse WRT roof problems.

I’m assuming the same - we had more on the roof in 2011 and it is expected to warm up helping the snow melt.

We were surprised yesterday at the sorry state of the sidewalks. The law here is you have to clear your sidewalk within 12 hours for commercial or 24 for residential.

The Town has a few sidewalk plows and these try to cover main routes but they can’t be relied on. The landlords and companies in the main commercial district and along a main street completely failed.

I was floored to see that Stop & Shop, a huge supermarket chain, was open but couldn’t hand shovels to employees to clear out the sidewalk - where, for example, the bus stops. It was completely covered in piles of snow. Most apartment buildings, including those run by big real estate concerns, didn’t try to clear snow. I saw residents taking pictures and one told me he was sending them to the Town. It’s really shameful.

I had to pull an elderly woman over a snowbank so she could visit her husband in the nursing home around the corner.

People walking in the middle of the road as cars go by is not safe but when the sidewalks aren’t cleared there is no choice.

And thing is it wasn’t hard to lift this snow. It was light. I could have cleared the Stop & Shop sidewalk in an hour by myself. Five people could have done it quickly.

Residents in our suburban community are required to clear snow from the sidewalks in front of their homes. It seems that every year it’s the same ones who can’t be bothered. This forces the kids to have to walk in the street to get to and from the bus stop.
