Big Snowstorm Headed for Northeast

Especially since this slush is totally going to freeze solid in the next few days.

Just back from Boston. There’s a lot of snow around but the sidewalks were clear where I was.

On-street parking looked challenging because of the snow.

It was mid-forties when I left and the snow was melting quickly. The sun comes out tomorrow.

On the way home, I saw one exit closed for plowing snow (95/93 North interchange) and saw a few work crews on the highway widening the highway.

Checked the roof - that 4 inch ice dam is still 4 inches. I expect it to be gone after tomorrow.

Bridgeport has only 100 roads that are passable and it looks like we may be in for more snow.

Doct, your post made me check weather.com. I don’t see any snow in the forecast. When is it supposed to snow again?

Thumper1, it’s supposed to snow in CT on Wednesday night.

WHDH is calling for 1-3" Wednesday night into Thursday morning across much of MA and CT, with 3-6" across southern MA.

Does anyone in New Haven know whether the area around Union Station has been cleared? I assume getting down the street will be ok, since that should be a priority road, but I’m wondering about finding a place to park while waiting to pick someone up.

Day 5 of the Nemo Hostage Crisis here.

The last I heard, the Wed/Thurs storm may go south of CT. Let’s hope that’s the correct forecast.

Peabodie: I’d check with Union Station or the city of New Haven. I don’t know what’s going on today, but yesterday police were stopping anyone from driving into areas of New Haven so they could get streets cleared and widened. I haven’t heard what’s happening today.

Stradmom –

That made me chuckle!

I try to keep expectations in line with reality and not be influenced by the 24/7 barrage of information. I feel bad for Marshfield and other places without power. (I’m worried about a friend’s house because I saw pictures of ones down the beach.)

But this was essentially a hurricane with ice and snow on the shore. It doesn’t get cleaned up instantly. I think the minute by minute reminders on TV tend to make us think it should all be done but it can’t. This is not like the big power loss northwest of Boston a few years ago when the small local utility could not get its act together and power was out for weeks.

I was impressed yesterday by the progress made in cleaning things up. Buses were running - and very full from what I saw and heard - and the T was not only running but they’d cleared every platform and crossing point at each stop. All the fire hydrants were dug out. Most but not all commercial landlords finally lived up to their obligations and shoveled.

I think this storm is seeming to affect us more because we have had no snow for a winter and a half. But only 2 years ago we were inundated with far worse than this - except the coast was not battered so hard. We got used to that but we forget.

I don’t need to read about this in the newspaper, or hear about it on TV or radio. I KNOW it snowed a lot. I can look out my window and see it. It must be a slow news week!

I see the snow for Wednesday night…maybe an inch…sounds easy peasy.

Well, tomorrow is our fourth day without school due to this storm. At this rate we’ll be celebrating the 4th of July from our classrooms.

My wife’s school still hasn’t been plowed. They’ve offered kids money to shovel it out. Today was the first day that we’ve been able to get out of our driveway. My wife went grocery shopping and there basically wasn’t much in the way of food anyplace. The stores are claiming the trucks have been breaking down and haven’t delivered yet.

EPTR, CT schools must complete the school year by June 30, and school cannot be made up on Saturdays. There are districts in this state that are going to take days from the April vacation to make up some of these “bad weather” days.

There have been a couple of years where kids in our county have gone to school until close to the end of June. Days were taken away from spring break as I recall.

That’s what worries me. After tomorrow, we will have three remaining days that can be used for weather emergencies. We used two for the hurricane and are up to four for Nemo. If we run out of days (like CT we need to be done by the 30th) we will look at holidays or April vacation. I have a trip planned for that week that we have been planning for months. I’m having flashbacks to my trip to Italy that was cancelled at the last minute due to the volcano in Iceland.

In Maryland, if there is a state of emergency, the days missed are not made up.

EPTR --

I hope that you don’t have to cancel your spring break trip. That would be so disappointing! We never schedule our summer vacations close to the anticipated last day of school because we never know how many snow days may be tacked on at the end of the year.

So is everyone back to school up there in New England today?

Nope. There were still plenty of schools closed in CT today.
