Big Snowstorm Headed for Northeast

I sent all out of town (flight away) staff home today. They were all trying to stick it out to see how it is tomorrow. I didn’t see the point.

Good boss move, oldfort.

[Flights cancelled as New York prepares for blizzard and winter storm “Nemo”](Blizzard 'Nemo': 2600 flights canceled as severe storm warnings issued for Northeast (VIDEO) | The World from PRX)

Flights cancelled in NYC, Boston and Philly already and airlines are waiving the rebooking fees. Boston, for instance, has closed all public/private schools for tomorrow as of 6PM tonight. My D has a regional audition for grad school in Ohio Saturday (school in NJ) and the school called her this morning to say that they decided not to travel because of the storm but would be holding the auditions, at the original place, via Skype!!

I’m in Cleveland. I’m taking my whole trip on Sunday. SW would have charged me to take one leg of the trip tomorrow and the rest on Sunday. So I’m taking the whole trip on Sunday with no charge to change. Of course, I had to extend my rental car the extra days. I hope the airports and snow are cleaned up by Sunday afternoon!

Hospitals dont close sigh…

Question posed by a FB friend…why would you name a blizzard after a movie tropical fish?

We got a robocall an hour ago from the electric company. We should have a generator, they said. Someone should take the people who think this kind of nonsensical call is a good use of resources out back and cane them. I can only conclude they’re trying to sidestep criticism for their future screwing up of fixing power outages. Hey, we called and warned people. Get a generator? Seriously? We should all have generators and fuel for them? One of the stupidest calls I’ve ever listened to. About as dumb as the guy on FoxNews who said Germany is doing better with solar because they get more sunshine.

Does seem stupid doesn’t it? Hey, dangerous storm on the way! What should we call it? Fluffy? Happy? How about Nemo?

According to the Boston Globe, as quoted by the NOAA: “Logan Airport to shut operations early Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon.” And “Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Service Suspended on All Lines Effective 3:30 PM on Friday, Feb. 8th.”

Boston’s shutting down public transportation tomorrow at 3. Mayor Menino has requested that anyone who has to go anywhere during the storm take public transportation instead of driving. I guess nobody’s going anywhere. I did actually see a suggestion that this could be the state’s way of trying to strong-arm workplaces that were insisting on staying open all day into closing. A lot of employees now won’t be able to stay the whole day anyway.

Funny moment in my office today when everybody’s phones vibrated at the same time with the emergency alert and a coworker thought there was random annoying noise going on.

Our power company’s email didn’t suggest a generator, just caution if you use one. I did my usual pre-storm preparation–which consists of making a hotel reservation downtown, where the power never goes out (unlike where we are in the outskirts of town where it seems to go out more and more often). With a well, no power also means no water at our place, and call me a brat, I can’t live without heat or water, nope, not even for a day.

“I hope the airports and snow are cleaned up by Sunday afternoon!”

I hope so, too, since my flight to Florida is at noon.

Have fun in Cleveland. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

ugh…and I have a boss who insists that I’m so important that I can’t work from home. Really? I do private equity - nothing will happen tomorrow that I can’t handle via conference call. Oopss…everything I do is via conference call. I really hate this guy…I will be livid if he decides to work from home tomorrow. I would put money on it he will.

Gotta love CC. Would rather read this than the weather updates. Much more informative, IMO. Thanks all!

^^^
Amen. I can only handle so many breathless TV weathercaster reports.

My problem is that I live within walking distance of work, so there would be no excuse of me not going to work. Maybe it will be a quiet day tomorrow.

Thumper1, I was going to tell you that if you get stuck at BWI, I would come get you! Now you are staying where you are?

Regretfully, in today’s world some need to be reminded in no uncertain terms that in the end, when push comes to shove YOU are responsible for YOURSELF!!! We live in a earthquake active area of CA…we…as do all of our responsible neighbors have generators. Is it the reminder that is insulting, or is it the insinuation that you may need to rely upon yourself that is insulting? Someone who lives in a vulnerable area and needs to have the obvious pointed out to them is in need of a caning.

Since we are going out of town, my husband is at this very moment making sure the generator works and giving our sons (17 and 20) a refresher course on using it. There’s probably about a 90% chance they’ll lose power.

I found a website, flightaware.com, that tells you where your departing plane came FROM, and the status of that flight. So I discovered that our plane is sitting at the gate already, whoo hoo! Our 6:44 am flight is still showing “ON TIME.” A lot of flights tomorrow afternoon are already canceled. If our trip had been one day later, we wouldn’t have made it.

How do people have generators in the city? We have one in VT and it’s a great comfort, but they have to be outside. Just peeked outside and the snow hasn’t started yet.
