Silverstream15… I PM’d you.

MomCares … I agree with you but that is probably a whole thread in itself! (Should BA performance/ BFA programs give students opportunities to use the skills they are being taught?) I very much feel, yes they should! But as you and I have pointed out, that is not always the case. I guess it depends on the true mission of a program… look good to get more people/funding or really help kids hone developing skills. And heads of programs are so important in this area. I can’t imagine kgjc doing anything but nurture the talents of his students and encourage that in his program. The first school that my D was in… I just don’t know.

MomCares - That’s another great question that you may want to ask as you go through the process. Can you graduate without ever having been cast in a “mainstage” production. That may or not be important to you, but if it is then ask. I think it is another one of those “philosophy of the program” questions.

Not a huge surprise but, my D has discovered the the audition process never ends. Always searching for new monologues and songs. No guarantee of being cast, etc. Plus weekly studio performances and recitals every semester. Constant evaluation. Her school doesn’t have cuts, but they do get plenty of feedback. Even in her BA program, there are many who leave the program as they begin to see “the handwriting on the wall.”

@austinmtmom - D has been finished with the process since December, as she was admitted ED to her first choice program. But she has lots of friends scattered in virtually every major MT program in the country so she hears what happens, and still (in spite of tons of up-front reconnaissance) has her own “home school” surprised ahead of her, no doubt!

@megpmom - I guess “constant evaluation” is the name of the game in their chosen profession. Can you imagine having to apply for a new job every few months for much of your life? Yucky!!

MomCares - I knew your D was going to Northwestern. That was a generic “you” to all those readers out there ;)

@austinmtmom - Ah! I do know that D still has plenty of unasked/unanswered questions about her program, so I have no doubt but that there will be plenty of surprises in her future. Hopefully most will be happy surprises!
