Bike helmet question

I need to get a new bike helmet. I really don’t like the looks of most helmets. I swear they are marketed to 15 year old boys. I know looks are secondary but really! I don’t see why helmets could look a little more attractive. I feel like manufacturers idea of a woman’s helmet is to make it smaller and pink. Anyhow, does anyone know if the Yakkay helmets are good. Are they safe? What about Bern? Any other suggestions?

Look at the Performance (bike shop and online retailer) website and you will find a good selection. I like my helmet just fine, but don’t even remember what brand it is. If it meets the certifications, it should be safe. You want the proper fit, too. Or go to REI.

Here is a link to a discussion of bicycle helmet safety standards.

[Bicycle Helmet Standards](Bicycle Helmet Standards)

It appears that the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) standard that has been in effect since 1999 governs the vast majority of helmets on the market. If you wish a somewhat tougher standard, you could look for a helmet that also meets the Snell B95 standard.

YAKKAY helmets are safe, I’m pretty sure, but if you’re in the US you might have a tough time finding one.

The Yakkay helmets are currently available from a shop in New York City. Their website says the following about the Yakkay helmets:

This helmet does not meet US certification ASTM F 2040 and CPSC. However, it does fully meets the European CE standard (EN1078).

I am no expert on the suitability of the U.S. CPSC standards versus the European standard. Personally, I would want to go with the tougher standard. YMMV

Also take a look at Nashbar dot com (online and cataloger). They carry a wide selection of bike helmets. Giro makes some helmets specifically for women (more typically girly colors and smaller fit).

I’ve worn Bell and Giro helmets. Prefer Giro (think they breathe better) but that’s personal preference.

For women’s biking gear, teamestrogen dot com is great. The cycling forums are active and friendly–kind of the cc for bicycling women. There are several forums for gear and apparel.
Good luck!

I recommend going to a shop and having them adjust the straps for you. I swear, half the people I see have helmets that will not do much good if the wearers get into an accident.

More like 8 and 9 year old boys. I wish more 15 year old boys would wear bike helmets…
