I’m told that students that use a bike on campus must also have a light on it regardless if they ride at night or not, is this true?

Any good recommendations on a bike light? Also do you have to have a red light at the back of the bike?

solid white in front, flashing red in back. Or at least thats what I think :)

This is what I found :)

A lamp emitting a white light which illuminates the highway and is visible from a distance of 300 feet to the front and the sides of the bicycle.

A red reflector mounted on the rear of the bicycle and visible from 500 feet to the rear of the bicycle.

A white or yellow reflector mounted on each pedal visible 200 feet to the front and rear of the bicycle and a white or red reflector on each side to the rear of the center of the bicycle, except bicycles which are equipped with reflectorized tires on the front and the rear need not be equipped with side reflectors. All reflectorized tires must meet DMV requirements.

You need a reflector (about 90% of bikes come with these), but you don’t need a light unless you’re going to be riding at night a lot. If a cop sees you without a light they’ll just give you a warning [the first time]. So basically, it’s worth it, since you’ll likely have a few night classes at least once.

pft i didn’t have a light in the front. jsut the normal reflectors taht come with the bike. and i never had any trouble. i’d be roaming around campus and town past midnight etc, and never got in any trouble

I would get a light just for the heck of it. It’s less than 20 bucks and I think the safety justifies that cost. Sometimes the streets are ridiculously dark that you won’t be able to see the uneven pavement on the bike path. Plus, it doubles as a flashlight if a blackout ever occurs =]
