Erm…my bike is incompatible with a fender. Will I need to buy a new bike that CAN attach a fender? Are they truly essential?

They really aren’t that necessary. I didn’t put a fender on my bike, as I don’t ride my bike when it rains. In the off chance that it rains while I’m riding my bike, I just bike around the puddles to prevent the water from splashing back.

Speaking of bikes, I highly recommend getting a U-Lock instead of one of a cheap coil lock. If your bike is expensive, I’d recommend using both. I see much more cut coil locks than anything else near the bike racks. Keep in mind that people who steal bikes don’t usually do it for cash, but instead just want to get from point A to point B in a faster manner.

What kind of bike should I get?

This one.

EDIT: Just go grab a good hybrid bike for riding around. Don’t bring anything fancy unless you intend on keeping it in your room. Get a good lock as well. Bulldog U-Locks are pretty good for the price (Cheaper than Kryptonite New York Series stuff). [Lock Strategy](Lock Strategy) to learn how to lock.

With that, I’d need to make a sign saying “STEAL ME”…
Or does it come with?

How is it incompatible with a fender? They can probably figure some way to work it out at the Bike Barn…

Something like the below should work.

http://www.performancebike.com/shop/Profile.cfm?SKU=5998&item=40-0470&slitrk=search&slisearch=true

what’s a fender on a bike?? lol

It keeps the water from flying at you.

So that you don’t get the freshman stripe.

I didn’t even know there was such thing as fenders for bikes…

Looks useful though! I might get one :/

Are bikes really necessary? Meaning is it really inconvenient to get around by foot?

It’s not THAT inconvenient… My friends all walk now. I guess sometimes it’s a hassle to get your bike to school, lock it up, and sometimes it’ll probably get stolen too.

But some people do find it “tiring” to walk all the way to class from the bus stop/their dorms because the class is very far away.

So far, for me… walking from the bus stop to my class hasn’t been too bad. It only gets annoying when I’m carrying my laptop in my backpack and the weather is hot. :(

Is there any suggestion as to what kind of bike I should get? How much should I be spending on the bike? I don’t wanna go get a walmart bike just to have it break down, but I also don’t want to spend over $1000 on a bike. Hybrid? Comfort? Road?

I heard the road bike is pretty good. BUT!! Be warned, since they’re pretty good, they have a higher chance of getting stolen? Haha

My boyfriend’s roommate didn’t really like his regular bike, so he went and bought a road bike (I think it was pretty expensive) and after two days, it got stolen.

Do NOT buy a $1000 bike… you won’t be doing any cycling marathons to get to class. I bought my bike at Target for about $150. Get any bike that feels comfortable to you… but think twice when getting a Cruiser… I swear I HATE PARKING NEXT TO CRUISERS!!! The handles make it so difficult to park your bike next to them. UGH!

Hundreds every year =O…

if you want to get a road bike, go for it, most of my friends ride them. If you’re going to get a nice road bike though, invest in a serious lock for it. I can cut through a cable lock in under 30 seconds, but to break a U-Lock i have to use thermite rolled into clay, picture non explosive C4, no boom, just burns at 4k degrees.

If a thief can’t just cut it, chances are he’ll move on, but make sure to lock it through the wheel and frame

Where do we keep our bikes overnight? Do we just leave them outside?

Yup, every dorm has structures outside for you to lock your bike on. I highly recommend a mini U-Lock as it gives thieves a very hard time cutting through your lock without scraping the bike.

Although hundreds of bikes are stolen every year, there are TENS of THOUSANDS of bikes on campus. If you lock it properly and invest in a heavier-duty U-Lock, thieves will probably move on to an easier bike. They mostly only steal them to get from point A to B.
