BIlly Mays died today. Apparently his wife found him dead in their home in Tampa. He was on a commercial airline flight yesterday that had a rough landing, and tires on the plane blew. Passengers were jostled around, no serious injuries. There is no sign of foul play. I have heard of no suicide note. Sounds as if he died in his sleep. She found him unresponsive at 7:45 this morning.

Here is additional info: Mays had just returned from Philadelphia, where he shot a new OxiClean commercial. He was a passenger aboard a plane that suffered a blown front tire upon landing. He told a local TV station, "All of a sudden as we hit you know it was just the hardest hit, all the things from the ceiling started dropping. It hit me on the head, but I got a hard head."

oops he was 3 weeks shy of 51.

Wow, same age as Michael Jackson.

Billy Mays twittered this yesterday per BayNews9 in the Tampa Bay area:
"Just had a close call landing in Tampa," he wrote. "The tires blew out upon landing. Stuck in the plane on the runway. You can always count on US Air."

They are also reparting his son twittered his passing as well: "My dad didn't wake up this morning.. I'm sure you'll all hear about it. It hasn't yet hit me but it's about to."

I know that MJ's record sales have gone through the roof since Thursday. Do you think Oxyclean and Kaboom will now be flying off the shelves?

Ds1 asked me, "Why are all these people dying?" It is weird.

When I saw notice of Billy's death a little while ago, the first thing that struck me was how I remember him doing live TV shopping shows like Home Shopping Network demonstrating some cleaning agent/spot remover stuff. During the TV demonstrations he would always be sticking his hand in a big glass canister stirring up the stuff showing stains being removed from clothes. His hands and knuckles you could plainly see were always raw, and red as if bleeding while doing all the demos...and he did a lot of demos. If the cleaner could take out the impossible stains, maybe the stuff could take him out!

sounds like a slow bleed from the blow to the head. like Natasha Richardson. wonder if he went to the dr after getting hit in the head or just thought it was a minor bump

The news reports yesterday of the plane landing incident all say there were no injuries. And USAIR is still reporting no injured. If they do find a subdural hematoma or an epidural hematoma, I suspect he didn't say anything other then the off the cuff comment he made to the TV news channel.

My father-in-law was kicked in the head by a horse at the age of 80, was taken to the ER where a CT scan was normal, and he felt fine until he collapsed 2 weeks later after a very slow bleed. After they drilled a hole to relieve the hematoma, he did great. It's been 8 years. We finally got him to sell the farm and the horses about 2 years after the injury. He was made of tough stuff. He just blew it off. And after the first CT was telling everyone "see, I told you I was fine." Head injuries can be very sneaky.

I'm sorry he died so young but I really won't be sorry to see the last of his "infomercials." I'd hit "mute" every time he came on with a commercial. I just wish he had retired voluntarily.

I remember reading that he got his start on the Atlantic City Boardwalk selling something. He caught the eye of someone and the rest is history.

I press "mute" too . I found his voice very annoying.

He was annoying on the commercials, but the ESPN ads were great!

^I agree. The ESPN ads were hilarious.

I watched The Pitchmen a few times. He really loved what he did.

"Wow, same age as Michael Jackson. "

And me.... gulp....

I must say I feel worse over this than Michael Jackson

My daughter is weirded out also. She wants to know what's up with June 2009.

Say what you will about Billy Mays. He was good at what he did. If you get a chance, watch Pitchmen. It's interesting.

I am also wierded out that 2 people of my exact age have died! I feel so young, yet so vulnerable at the same time.

Some reports now say (my mom gets TMZ twitter!) Billy wasn't wearing a seatbelt during plane landing. A head injury is a strong possibility. My dad and I were rear-ended in car wreck a few years ago. The back of our car was folded up into backseat. Neither of us went to hospital immediately even though ambulance was at wreck. We should have gone immediately in ambulance to emergency room. A few days later my Dad was getting light headed and dizzy and did go to hospital where they did exam him including cat scan of his head. He was fine but if I, or anyone I know, ever gets shaken up again or hit on head in future, I am going to get checked out by a doctor.
