Binghampton VS Auburn VS UNC Chapel Hill VS University of Tennessee Knoxville

I am a senior who has received significant scholarship to each of these schools but UNC Chapel Hill. I either want to major in Pre-med or Industrial Engineering. UTK would be instate and would be the best deal but I am unsure of the quality of the school. I like the idea of going north to Binghampton, but have not visited and do not know anyone else that is going. Any advice?

You were already accepted to UNC -CH as an out of state student? How did you hear about Binghamton?

Binghamton receives a mention on an online list related to your interests: “The Experts’ Choice: Colleges with Great Pre-med Programs.” “Pre-med,” though, is not a major, so be aware of this if you aren’t already. You should visit your choices before you commit to one of them. Good luck.

I applied early action to both, so yes! And Binghamton notified me with a packet in the mail. @twogirls

Congratulations on your offers. I would not make any decisions until you visit these schools. Hopefully that will be possible. Unfortunately I do not know anything about UTK or Auburn.

If you can afford it, UNC trounces ALL of your other choices. I’m not so sure you’d enjoy the freezing cold and lack of sunshine up north. Auburn isn’t a bad school, neither is Tenn. But this should be a no-brainer.

Well, keep in mind that there’s no engineering school at UNC-Chapel Hill. If there’s an Industrial Engineering department there, it must be located in some other part of the university.

I’m familiar with Chemical Engineering at UTK and its very good. I hear Knoxville is a fun college town. Bear in mind that UTK is built upon hills. There are hills everywhere on campus.

There is no industrial engineering at UNC. Closest major would be operations management, at the business school (which requires separate admission after sophomore year).

Why Binghamton (I’m assuming you spelled it correctly on your application)? It’s a great school, but is it a fit? Nearly 90% of students are from NY, mostly NYC and Long Island. Weather usually ranges from dreary to brutal, not many really nice days. Campus is rather unimpressive (have you visited?). What attracts a Tennessee kid?

You didn’t mention cost. What is your net cost for each?

@seniorita1: The quality of UTK, your in-state option, is very good in the areas that you want to study – engineering or hard science (for pre-med). In fact, those areas of study – along with supply-chain management/logistics in the Haslam College of Business – are among the academic strengths of UTK. You will get a very good education at UTK in what you want to study; and it is likely your best financial option. If you haven’t visited, I suggest that you do so; and now would be a good time to visit Binghamton, so you will get an idea of what winters in rural New York are like.

Just to give another stat. OOS student. 33 ACT,

Premed is not a major. What will your major be if you’re premed?

Are you a NMF???

Anyway…with HOPE and any merit, then UTenn is the cheapest, right?

Why Industrial E? Are you premed for sure, or not sure?

I agree that UNC would be the best school, if it’s affordable.

I would not consider Binghamton without visiting it first while school is in session, if possible. It is in upstate NY and the winters are terrible. Additionally, most of the students are from NYC and the surrounding eastern and northern suburbs. You really need to visit to see if you would like it.

I won’t suggest what the right amount of cloudy days is, but I will note that Binghamton receives less of them than cities such as Seattle and Portland.

@mom2collegekids
No, not a NMF. I should have clarified in my original post that I would be a pre-med concentration while majoring in molecular biology.
Yes, UTK would be the cheapest as I have Hope + Automatic 12k a yr+ 5k school Scholarship.
I have spent extensive time shadowing doctors and am interested in medicine because it combines both science and humanism. I have a fascination with the human body and desire to help others but I am not for sure on this path yet . On the other hand, I am interested in IE because I enjoy problem solving and am intrigued by the idea of searching for ways to increase productivity.

Why Binghamton??

Binghamton happens to be a very good school - you could apply to their early assurance medical school program(not sure if you had to have done this already but it’s worth asking). The only concern I have, which may not be a concern at all, is being an out of state student where almost everybody is from NYC and the surrounding suburbs. It may take some getting used to, or perhaps not- it really depends on you. Did you get an offer to do undergraduate research as a freshman?

Personally I’d choose between UNC-CH and Auburn, but would be UNC-CH if you can afford it because it’s world-class and both would offer a different experience than UTK, as I think college is a good time for discovering another part of the country (without family and jobs keeping you in one place).
What’s the net price for each and how much can your family afford/have your parents given you for a budget?

With your scholarships to UTK, I am estimating that your undergraduate education there will cost about $5K per year, compared with the $48K+ for UNC-CH. That’s a net difference of $40-$45K per year, which is really hard to justify when (1) the education you get in molecular biology at UTK is not going to be very different that that what you would get at UNC-CH; and (2) should you choose to study IE, you can’t do that at UNC-CH. If there is any chance that you will go to medical school in the future, save your money for that by going to UTK for your undergraduate degree so that you can avoid being hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt after getting out of medical school.

Go to the school that leaves you options for your interests. Do not go to UNC-CH if you are thinking about engineering.

LakeWashington, UNC does have engineering. They have Environmental Sciences and Engineering (rated # 20 on US news) and Biomedical Engineering (rated #41).
