I know that MIT has the best program among the three. Any comments on why one would choose Harvard and Yale over MIT. What are the pros and cons of each school? Research, facility student Ratio, job placement etc.
Am I correct in inferring that this is a purely theoretical discussion?
For a start, MIT is a very distinct culture and it really doesn’t suit everybody.
The relative pros and cons of super-elites are largely in the overall package than in the specific programs. Yale, for example, does not stand out for any of the engineering disciplines, but if your goal is general-public prestige, you will prefer it to (say) JHU or GaTech, both of whose bioeng programs lap Yale. If you plan to actually go into bioeng (v, say, IB), your potential colleagues and employers will see those programs as more prestigious than Yale. It all depends who you are trying to impress.
Ummm, because they did not get into MIT?
Such a question is best asked when one actually has offers from these 3 fine universities.
Only MIT is known for being in the top category for Bioengineering. Harvard and Yale are not. Not sure if you are chasing based on the overall name of the college rather than the major. You should look carefully at the individual programs as they vary a great deal. All are pretty tough to get into.
Trying to decide which one to EA
True
Then you answered your own question.
100% agree. Harvard and Yale are of course excellent schools, but they not considered great Bioengineering schools.
The students at Harvard and Yale historically had a greater connection to the existing power class of the world. MIT has been more of a meritocracy. If that actually helps someone not in that group already is subject to debate.
Deleted.
Deciding where to EA is a bit different than deciding where to go if you are fortunate enough to have a choice among 3 of the most selective schools. Data from the Harvard litigation showed historically at least that there was an admissions boost for Harvard. Anecdotally, while Yale denies that there is a boost, there is a suspicion that there is at least an advantage stemming from the fact that every place in the “orchestra” is still open, especially if you have a “niche” (the proverbial tuba player). The reputation for MIT is that there is no advantage. So from a gaming perspective, Harvard is probably the best choice for REA.
When it comes to choices if you ever get there, to me it is an individualized question of goals and fit. First and foremost, you want to be choosing a school where you will be happy and have the best chance of success. After that, it is a question of goals and certainty of field of study. Choosing MIT is a commitment to a STEM focused course of undergraduate study. Harvard and Yale allow much greater opportunity to venture into other areas.
