Biology at Brown

What do you learn and what textbook do u use in the first year bio class?

Do you mean bio 20? The introductory level? A lot of people pass out of that with AP/IB credit or a placement exam.

The cool thing about intro bio at Brown is that it is taught by the professor that most likely wrote the bio book you used in high school (Miller and Levine). He also has a tendency to assign a bunch of interesting readings–from Richard Dawkins (The Selfish Gene) to Kurt Vonnegut (Galapagos)

kid, stop asking pre-med questions, ok? no one gives a damn, and it’s giving me the impression that you’re just a prestige-hungry toolbag looking to go to med school to get a high seat in society. do you even like biology?

if u don’t give damn, then why do you post reply? And I would like to know why you think being ambitious is bad. Are you against successful Asian-Americans?

I’m against people who cry racism left and right. I’m also against people with terrible grammar.

I’m against anyone who sees an MD as the easy way to move up in society.

i’m against people who are presumptious and unnecessarily mean-spirited.

getting into a medical school is a bottle-neck–there are less than half the amount of seats in this country than there are qualified people who want them (most of whom are not only very bright but motivated enough to put themselves through orgo, MCATs and everything else one has to do to apply)

some people know this. some of these people are a bit anxious as a result–if they’ve got questions because they want to be better informed, i think they ought to be cut a little slack.

in fact, that’s what this whole forum is about–wanting to get into an ivy league school isn’t so different from wanting to get into med school

Perhaps not, but from reading this guy’s posts, it seems to me like he just wants to be a doctor for the prestige (like amor caelestis said), or just for the money, and he wants to do it in the easiest way possible (“how to be good at biology” thread… where he says he doesn’t want to hear the advice of ‘study harder’).

I don’t think we need doctors with that kind of attitude.

Whatever dude. Since I was a kid, I have wanted to become a team physician for my favorite football team, so I don’t give a damn about what you guys say.

Why do you want to go to Brown, and then jump on someone for wanting to go to medical school? It takes a very priviliged upbringing to look down on hard work and focus with regards to career preparation.

Come on, people. If the guy’s got questions, let him ask them. If you don’t like his questions, then don’t reply to them. He’s not offending or insulting anybody, so why insult him? There’s no reason to make assumptions about who he is or what he wants. He’s not hurting anybody, so if you don’t like it, just move on.

Someone just answer the freaking question and let’s move on.

How do you answer “what do you learn in first year bio?” Honestly. From what I’ve heard, you learn basically AP bio, which is why they accept placement for it.
