Biology

I got a 690 on the BIO E subject test. However I got a 7 on the IB Bio test which is basically a 5 on the AP test. Should I retake the subject test or does the ib test already show enough proficiency?

@Jbanks152‌ Well your subject score definitely sends some red flags. You might consider retaking it so that you can get a 750+. I got a 5 on the AP test and a 790 on the SAT II, which is more aligned with expectations.

Based on a Google search, a 7 on the IB Bio test is actually quite impressive, whether it’s SL or HL - only about 4.5% of the test takers get it. However, @Smargent‌ is right in saying your credibility is a bit diminished by that subject test score. I have heard that the curve is a bit harsher on the Bio E test vs. Bio M, so perhaps try the other one next time? Otherwise, did you go into the subject test without studying? There is a pretty good chance that your IB Bio class taught more than enough material for the Bio subject test, while not covering some of the more rote memorization-driven content that is found on the subject test.

So, I would advise that you retake the test, especially if the school(s) you’re applying to require subject tests.

Is a 750 on the Biology M as a freshman bad?

Yeah, only problem is I am done with biology, so I’d have to cover up a lot of material since I don;t take the class. Also, yes, I did not study for it and IB Bio taught me a lot more material but the subject test was more broad and had some material i did not know. @Smargent‌ @EngineBus2015‌

Yes @collegestorm‌

@Jbanks152‌ - Then if you don’t want to study for the test, leave it be, and perhaps try another subject. If you do have intentions to retake, do it in October, while the IB Bio material is still fresh in your head. Plus, you can use these next two to three months to study some of the other stuff that is found on the subject test.

@collegestorm‌ - Considering most freshmen will not have bio knowledge beyond perhaps an Honor’s Biology course, no - your score is not bad. In fact, you’re probably fine just leaving it as it is (not retaking in case you were considering it) because 750+ (including 750) demonstrates sufficient subject mastery for even the most prestigious schools.
