Biomedical Engineering Question

My D is a freshman BME major, taking the standard curriculum for that major and year of study, which includes BME 140. She tells us that she is about in the middle of the class to date with test scores averaging about 50, which she interprets to be in the C to C- range. In her other classes (physics, chemistry, and calculus), she is earning solid A’s. Does the BME dept really intend to flunk a large portion of the class? Or, is this simply a crude method for reducing the number of students majoring in BME (i.e., “weed out”, which I thought was not a typical Wash U practice)? Or is there something else going on that I/we don’t understand? Perhaps you upper division BME majors (or their parents) can help with these questions?

Thanks!

Most of the people in bme 140 get either an A or a B. If she is performing “average,” then she should be somewhere in the B range.

pB–
So, are you saying that a test score of 50 out of 100 could equate to a B?

Once everything gets curved at the end of the semester, it will probably equate to a grade somewhere in the B range. This is what happens to the majority of people.
