Birmingham Free Clinic

Hi. My daughter has an opportunity to work at the Birmingham Free Clinic at 44 South 9th Street. We are not from Pittsburgh, so I would first like to know if it is in a safe neighborhood. And then, what bus or buses does she need to take to get there.

Also if there is any one out there that has volunteered at this Clinic, if you can give any advice, thoughts, information on what you did, etc. Thanks.

That’s the South Side which is quite safe. There are various bus options depending on the time of day and willingness to walk. - it’s best to query using google transit (google maps directions, then click on bus icon for transit directions).

The Birmingham Free Clinic is located in Southside, as southeastmom has stated. There is a transit bus (PAT Transit - Bus 48) that services the clinic neighborhood, but does not, unfortunately, go into Oakland, where Pitt is located. Access to the 48 bus would be from Downtown, and there are multiple bus routes that go between Oakland and Downtown. If you want to check on bus schedules/routes, here’s the PAT website where you can use the Trip Planner. (Incidentally, unlimited use of the PAT Transit system in included in the tuition at Pitt - wonderful benefit for Pitt students.):

The various Pitt schools of health (especially Pharmacy, Medicine, and Public Health) are heavily involved with the Birmingham Clinic, although it is not owned or operated by Pitt or UPMC. The clinic provides a valuable health service to the under-served population in the Pittsburgh area.

Here’s a very recent article from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette talking about the Birmingham Clinic:

D1, a pharmacy student, has been volunteering there for two or three years. She’s never mentioned any problem in the area.

thank you very much for responding. you both provided very helpful information.
