I’m a senior who’s soon going to be applying to college and I always wondered whether having a birth defect could actually be beneficial for the application process. I was born with an extreme case of syndactyly where I had no fingers at all on my right hand. I had to undergo major hand surgery at the age of two just so that I can get “fingers” yet they do not appear to be.

I know colleges always look for a diverse student body, many of them advertise it all of the time, so would a birth defect that has severely affected my life actually make me stand out among other prospective students. Is it possible that they can see it for what it really is-an obstacle that I was forced to overcome? Oh, and concerning the diversity thing, I’m hispanic too.
