Birthday present for girl turning 16?

A friend of mine has a daughter who’s coming up on 16 and she’d like to get her a memorable gift. I don’t have any girls and it’s been 112 years since I turned 16. You guys always rock at this kind of thing–any suggestions?

I got my daughter a good necklace and earrings in her birthstone for her 16th. It’s something she can keep and wear for years.

How much do you want to spend? What are the girl’s interests? Do you want this to be a permanent gift (jewelry, musical instrument?) or something that will be used and perhaps outgrown (not physically) like the leather jacket that she always coveted?

A spa day with friends then a nice night out??

We got our D an expensive pearl necklace. She loves pearls and it will be something that she’ll always have.

My mom bought my younger daughter a Tiffany silver keychain for her 16th BD. D was on the verge of getting her driver’s license, doesn’t wear jewelry, her ears aren’t pierced, etc. None of the other girls in the extended family have/had one, so it was unique to her.

A working car.

A car?? I would not get that.

We gave our daughter a day out with the friend of her choice. She wanted to go to the mall. We gave her enough money for lunch for the two of them. Then we gave each girl $50 spending money. It was one of the most fun, and least expensive birthday “parties” we ever threw…they had a GREAT time.

Now…for a gift, our kiddo also got a birthstone earrings and necklace set.

I have boys, but one of the sweetest things I have ever heard of was my girfriend’s DH who got their DD a diamond pendant (appropriate for a young lady…not large). He wanted to be the first man to give her a diamond. She is only allowed to wear it on special occasions, but she will have it the rest of her life. This depends on your budget, but the sentiment was very meaningful.

100 shares of stock.
Taught me about managing my financial portfolio at an early age.

I think ideally she’d like an heirloom-type thing–something she could pass down to her own child someday vs. something like a spa day or day with friends. I like the key chain idea. In my family the males often get an engraved Tiffany’s silver belt buckle for hs graduation. And I did suggest a birthstone piece from her father. Keep the ideas coming!

If the mother has a piece of older jewelry with a stone that could be reset into a pendant or a pin, that could be something neat (assuming the D would appreciate something like that).

We gave D jewelry, sterling silver because she loves it. A nice necklace and earrings that she will have forever.

Birthday gift for a 16 year old? That’s easy:

An advanced driving skills course like those described [here.

Or at least a book like this”>http://www.amazon.com/Professional-Driving-Techniques-Essential-Confidence/dp/0979381312/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1294535516&sr=8-1]this one](http://blogs.consumerreports.org/cars/2010/08/teen-defensive-driving-school-improves-confidence-skills.html).

PB Teen sells a reasonably priced sterling silver photo locket necklace that can be engraved for free (insert pictures of family members before presenting it).

Depending on budget: Jewelry: David Yurman and John Hardy sterling silver, or pearls or diamond studs. Tiffany key chain with or without a car key. Trip to somewhere wonderful and different.

I bought my nieces sterling silver necklaces from Tiffany’s. Their is a Tiffany’s directly across the street from the Catholic HS in my town. The women there new exactly what to suggest for a sweet 16! I only have a son, we gave him a trip to Tanzania. It was a safari and through his school.

I hate typing on the iPhone. I meant to say “there is” not their. I swear the older I get the dumber I get.

Girls love Tiffany’s jewelry. The have necklaces with their initial which I have given. I have also given a heart, a teardrop and a cross. Also my daughter loves her “Coach” key chain.
