ok the thing is that i took some placement exams in my college a couple of days back…and surprisingly i did well enough to be given credit for the classes i had pre-registered for…now they want me take second year courses…(in 2 subjects)

my question is how will this play out if i transfer after 1 year??

i had opted for classes that had been identified as prerequisites for applying, by the college i want to transfer to (cornell engineering)…so firstly will they accept these higher courses as well, and secondly would i be given credit by cornell (if they accept me) for the classes i have been given credit for by my current college??? and also my gpa may not be as good if i were to take these 2nd year classes…would cornell consider that as well???

Did you find out about the prerequisite standing for the courses through a web site or someone you contacted directly at the university? I would email someone first if you have the time and get their take on it.

In my opinion, which could be completely backwards since I’m not in your position, I would take on at least one of the higher level courses, 2 if I really wanted the challenge and kind of “expected” to place out of the class (if you really feel your prior knowledge of the subject is pretty solid). If other people are trying to transfer into the program and are taking lower level prerequisite courses, it might give you the advantage. If they don’t offer credit (their standards might be higher due to harder classes, so they might have required a higher score to be able to opt out), they’ll still see that you worked harder, and are better prepared to handle their courses.

I’m sure they’d consider the fact that your GPA is lower, which might hurt your standing a bit, but if I were an admissions officer, I’d rather have a B+ student with work ethic tackling a more rigorous schedule than admit an A student who took a bunch of irrelevant electives.

i did email them and am waiting for their reply…hopefully theyll tell me the same thing as u did…

and NJCC i have been credit for calculus and the general physics courses (which i would have taken for both the semesters this year)…

anyways the reason why i posted this question here was to get the views of students who had been in a similar sort of a situation recently or to just get ur general take on it…

You shouldn’t worry about it, take the advanced classes. Even though you got credited for calc and physics you still got lots of math, physics, chemistry classes to take. I’m even pretty sure they expect from a transfer engineering student to take all these advanced classes.
I’m currently in a CC and I’m also planning to apply to Cornell engineering. I’m taking all the advanced classes.
