I keep wifi turned off at home as it is much slower than 4g and spotty, which is why I like to tether. We seem to be in a hole :(, not sure what the kids are doing.

I tether too.

I’m getting rid of Verizon as soon as our contract is up because we won’t be able to keep the unlimited data plan at that point. I have 3 phones on our plan and each of the kids regularly use about 2.5 GB a month. To be on the safe side, I’d want the 10GB plan because if they have a high usage month at the same time, I don’t want to get to hit with a massive bill. The issue is, the 10GB plan is more expensive than the current plan. T-Mobile and Sprint both have better deals for unlimited everything. I’ll save around $60 a month when I switch. Most months we use less than 6 GB. We also pay for 1400 minutes but use less than 100. They’re making their money off of us, trust me- unlimited data or not.

It’s just like cable and Internet providers- they hook you with a good deal, then the price goes up and up and up until you realize how much of your income you’re spending on that stuff and switch to a new provider, where you can get a good deal again.

You have to play the switching game.

I think Sprint and T-mobile both throttle the speed once you hit a certain amount of data. And it’s not a lot, like 2 Gb.

So they are not really unlimited.

As if one could upgrade if you even wanted to this week anyway… the Verizon website has been a disaster for the past couple of days. D1 decided she wants to move to a smart phone, and she wants the iPhone 5 that just dropped in price yesterday after the new announcements. It took us many tries to log into my account and get through the steps to order the phone – it seems like we got through every screen in the end, but now can’t actually tell if the order went through. No luck getting anyone on chat for the last two days from the website, there is a note next to the chat button saying all chat operators are busy.
So can’t even tell if D1’s new phone is on the way to her or not!

EK what app do you use to tether?

I’ve been using PDAnet but the new version drops a lot and I don’t quite understand the fox fi thing.

We were very excited at the prospect of moving to T-Mobile where we would save $100/month over the cost of four smart phones on Verizon.

We were disappointed when it turned out we couldn’t reliably get service in our house, my office, places my kids go, etc.

Where it worked, it was great. I think it’s a great option if you live in an area that is well-covered.

Perhaps we’ll try switching to AT&T or Sprint when we’re off contract with Verizon in two years.

I use the Verizon personal hotspot control panel for tethering.

I think a lot of people overestimate their data needs. Or maybe our company just doesn’t use it much! We have about 10 phones plus at least a couple of iPads on our company plan and stay under 10GB most months. All of the phones are smart phones with a mixture of Blackberries and iPhones. I just got a new iPhone this week…

My kids use most of their two GB every month.
I think they up load photos.
