I have an unlocked iphone 5.
Unlocked so I am grandfathered for unlimited data.
However, Verizon has decided what I shell out to them isnt enough & the new iphones wont work.
Thanks for saving me money!
My iphone5 is good enough for the two years left on its warranty and my options may change by then.

EK
Not sure what you mean. I also have an unlocked iphone 5 I purchased from Verizon at full retail so I could keep the unlimited data. What do you mean the new iphones won’t work?
Dadx3

Verizon says they will not allow unlocked phones.
Currently I have a grandfathered plan with unlimited data that I only obtained because my phone is unlocked.
If I had bought a phone through my Verizon acct, I would have been obligated to get a new plan.
The unlocked iPhones will not work on Sprint or Verizon Wireless.

To clarify, if you already have an unlocked phone you are good.
But the new, yet to be released phones, wont work.

EK I also am grandfathered on the data package but my smart phone is getting tired…what I did was buy an extra line ($10 mo phone only) and then switch online which number belongs to which…thus the new phone runs on the grandfathered plan.

Tricksy!
:D

Verizon will do whatever they can to get us off our unlimited data plan. I have a question, though. I have an unlimited plan but the rest of my family is on limited data plans. I have a droid but am considering moving to an Iphone. Can I take my daughter’s old Iphone and switch it to my number, get her a new phone and keep the old Iphone on the unlimited?

I’m confused.
The iPhone 5 shipped unlocked.
They are all unlocked.

I don’t understand the relationship between having an unlocked phone (which just means you can take it OFF the Verizon network and activate it on another service) and having an unlimited data plan.

My understanding is that you can’t keep your unlimited data plan if you take a subsidized phone from Verizon, but if you pay full price for one, they will let you keep your plan as-is. Perhaps what they are saying is that they won’t let you keep your plan as-is if you bring in a phone from somewhere else that you paid full price for?

P.S. My husband and I put off getting new phones because we didn’t want to lose the unlimited data plan. But eventually we decided it was silly to pay the built-in subsidy fee and never take advantage of the subsidized phone. So we got new phones, switched from unlimited data to a tiered data plan where we pay the same as we did before, but only get 2 GB…and, amazingly, I have barely used 0.5 GB per month. I connected my phone to the Wi-Fi (which I hadn’t done before), but other than that, I don’t really limit what I do. And I’m just not using that much data. I was worried 2 GB wouldn’t be enough but it is plenty.

I think Verizon will not be selling the newly announced iPhone 5S and 5C unlocked - they will only sell at the discounted price with a one or two year contract, which bumps you off of any grandfathered unlimited data plan. You may still be able to buy the iPhone 5 from Verizon unlocked while they are still in stock.

I had to buy my iphone5 from Apple, as Verizon was out.
Verizon & Sprint phones are CDMA.
Apple will sell unlocked iPhones 5s & 5c but only the GSM version.
I use my phone to tether, so I want to keep unlimited.

TMobile gives my family unlimited data on our Galaxy smartphones for a reasonable price. Just sayin…

Not sure why you feel entitled to unlimited data for the rest of your life. Verizon decided not to sell that plan any more. They probably should never have sold it in the first place. The networks can’t handle millions of users actually consuming all the data their device is theoretically capable of.

In any case, how much data do you use every month? For the $20/month you’d save by getting a subsidized phone, you can probably get 6 Gb/month. If two of you get new phones, you can probably hit 10 Gb. Plus, you get new phones.

I don’t want a "subsidized"phone, I want to keep my original plan.
We have 700 minutes & we don’t use it all now.
That isn’t offered anymore.
I don’t mind paying for what I use, I just don’t want to pay for more than what I use.
Im waiting until you can use any phone, just as when we had a land line.

I’m really confused. The unlimited data concern is not an issue (not sure how many people this actually affects).

One of the huge benefits of the unlocked iPhone 5 (or 4s) was the ability to simply plop in foreign SIM while traveling and have the phone work easily. Are you all saying the Verizon iPhone 5s and 5c will no longer be internationally capable due to a forced Verizon lock (which can be broken) or that there actually will be two different physical phones - one GSM and one CDMA - like in the olden days?

I am a little confused. It does sound like different models.
[Switchers May Find Better Value in Start iPhone 5S, 5C Experience on Verizon, Sprint](Switchers May Find Better Value in Start iPhone 5S, 5C Experience on Verizon, Sprint)

^^ That would make sense. Since Verizon is the largest carrier using CDMA and just about everyone else uses GSM my guess is the Verizon phone is the basic GSM phone PLUS CDMA.

I just got a new phone because my old one passed away… I had the same concerns about losing my unlimited data plan. I have 6 GB plan and it’s the same price as before and I barely use it all. Verizon does have users that consume so much data that they slow everything down for everyone else. I can’t say I blame Verizon for phasing out this overly generous plan. I would if i owned the network. On other networks you may get unlimited data but those carriers can slow it down so much, they artificially limit your usage anyway and the network is slower and can be clogged and frustrating. I always turn on the wifi setting on my phone and use my secure FiOS network at home and also connect securely at work. I really don’t even have to do this. I am just being cautious so I don’t go over my data allowance. I think your fears are unfounded unless you are downloading or live streaming constantly.

We were also wary of moving from the Verizon unlimited data plan, but were forced to when my husband bought a new phone. I think we have three iPhones working off of the same 4GB of data and do not come anywhere near hitting that limit each month. As marybee explained above, we automatically move onto the house WiFi. We don’t download movies or You Tube, but my husband used it until recently as a GPS in the car, and still did not have a problem.

Yes AllThisisNewstoMe, but I recently and woefully discovered that T-Mobile Doesn’t work very well some regions out west. And here I thought they were a NATIONAL company. Of course, this is true of Sprint also.

My office is 32 miles of my home. Verizon is great and very much beloved there. They won’t even sign up people in my residential zip code. There is no coverage here. S1’s gf has Sprint, works fine in nearest town 10 miles away…no coverage here. TMobile worked poorly at S1’s college, 56 miles away, but ok here. I think they all have these issues.

So I’m at the only player for my area, AT &T, otherwise known as customer service he__.

We came into the smartphone world a year ago, we have 3gb plans, and never ever come close. As others posted, it switches to wifi at home and asks if we want wifi whenever it locates a network when we are elsewhere. I haven’t figured out how people go over their limits if they have wifi available.
