Bizarre computer question

Every time our phone lines get wet, we have trouble connecting to the Internet with DSL.

Here’s the weird part: our computer automatically dials 911. The police try to call back, but since it’s the computer line they can’t get through, and two uniformed officers show up at the door.

Here’s another weird part: this has also happened on a second phone line in the house, that is not connected to the computer.

I can imagine that, in trying to connect to the Internet, the computer is somehow throwing out signals. But why 911? And why the second phone line, too, which no one was trying to use at the time?

I feel as if our house is possessed.

This same thing happened to me at work. Somehow the phone was programmed to dial ‘911’ everytime the number ‘4’ was hit. Somehow the phone line was programmed previously to do that. What we did was get rid of the voice mail, and the problem was solved. Talk to SBC and see if numbers are preprogrammed into the phone. You might have to get a new number and/or new phone. Good luck, and be prepared to be very annoyed as it took 5 visits to my office from the SBC tech to figure out the problem.

Thanks for the suggestion. This is actually two different phones – that is, one phone and one computer – on two different lines. I talked to SBC this morning and they said there might be water in the terminal box, but seemed to have no clue as to why 911 was being called. Also, we’ve had both these lines for years and this has happened only this past month.

Come on – one of you teenaged computer geniuses out there. Here’s a chance to prove what we all know, that you’re smarter than your parents.
