I was intrigued when I heard the expression “thuggee” in an early Indiana Jones movie.
Actually, this professors tweets are mild in comparison to her Facebook condescension and mocking of a white rape victim. If these are truly her posts, her arrogance and lack of compassion are quite astounding. I don’t recall seeing posts of such viciousness at any point on this forum. Ever.
I just read an article about her Facebook attack on the white rape victim and it maks me ill! I think this woman has some very serious personal issues and should not be teaching anyone!
I wonder if her “pay grade” is really $82,000? In some fields, publicly disclosing your salary is reason for dismal. Maybe that would be an easy way out for BU to terminate her employment?
I would assume her pay grade is higher than that, based upon her comment that she was educating someone at 82k below
Wow. If what has been reported is true, this woman has some serious issues that cannot be explained by “passion.”
I am thinking that the Facebook posts might just do her in. This woman has no business teaching anyone anything. She is also on some sort of a power trip.
here is a link to a story about the facebook posts:
Many universities have confidentiality agreements surrounding salaries, but many don’t (and many publics, you can simply look up the salary of any faculty member in a book or website somewhere).
82K looks generous but believable for a beginning assistant professor with no postdoctoral experience and little publication, in that field.
I realize this is a minor point, but I don’t think that she was declaring that she made 82K, but more. I believe that she was saying she was wasting her time, by bothering to explain things that were 82K BELOW her pay grade.
“Do you see how you just took an issue that WASNT about you, MADE it about you, and NOW want to play the victim when I take the time to explain to you some s… that is literally $82,000 below my pay grade?”
Hmm, I think it is too complex to assume she estimated the earning power of her interlocutor, say 23K per year, and subtracts that from her actual, say, 105K. It is more logical for her to act like her victim is worthless/unemployed and therefore on 0.
More than 82K is anyway highly unlikely for a new appointee in sociology!
Maybe so. And that would be even more condescending, if that could even be possible.
It’s not clear to me from the article what relevance the commenter being a rape victim had to the issues of racism that Grundy was discussing. The article doesn’t even explain why the commenter brought that up. Without that information, I can’t form an opinion about whether Grundy was correct in essentially accusing her of “derailing.” But whether or not she was derailing, there’s really no excuse for Grundy’s decision to excoriate her in such over-the-top fashion. One hopes that Grundy’s behavior in the classroom is considerably more measured than her behavior on the Internet.
It does not sound like there was any “derailing” - the posters were simply discussing an article about the infamous Oscar speech, and the rape victim commented that she felt like the author of the article was telling her, a white woman, to shut up and to never ask for help. This comment made the poster Sai explode with her mean, hateful garbage… Even stock message board are more respectful than that.
In this day and age, it really pays off to do your social media due diligence on job candidates. I guarantee that in the corporate world, the discovery of this kind of Facebook behavior would have made the employer think twice about offering such a candidate the job.
Lord Commander speaketh on Facebook.
BU is a private institution, so salaries are not public, but you can find some info on the average salary for an Assistant Professor at BU…
http://faculty-salaries.startclass.com/l/5413/Boston-University
Average 9 Month Salary: $92,094
Average Effective Annual Salary: $122,793
The data is from the National Center for Education Statistics, part of the US Department of Education.
$82K seems about right.
No, niquii. Thug is used to describe criminals, and if some of them happen to be black, that doesn’t make the word a synonym for black or a new version of the n word. The guy in Ferguson was a thug since he’d just hit up a c-store. That doesn’t now mean that the word thug is a descriptor of black people any more than it suddenly means a descriptor of Missourians.
I think of a thug as someone who is kind of stupid and falls into a life of petty or small violent crime. A mass murderer is not a thug. A premeditated terrorist is not a thug. That takes too much preplanning. Of course a thug can be any race, duh.
A small weak thug may be termed a punk.
Good one. Yeah, the punk is the guy who swipes change out of the coffee shop tip jar when no one’s looking. The thug doesn’t care who sees him and is more blatant. The Michael Brown video (I finally remembered the guy’s name) of the c-store is about as classic thug as one can get. And I don’t know why it’s verboten to say that.
But, better to divert efforts to whether thug is the new n word than to address the pathology of communities that breed a lot of criminals, eh?
