Actually it was a boys dorm, since I was part of a co-ed tour during the open house. I hope I am thinking of the right one…

But there was a big clock- looking thing kindof mounted on a wall, and surrounding it were different levels of rooms. I don’t exactly know how to explain it, but the rooms were all centered around the “clock” and you can look across the space to other dorms when you are leaving your room. Of course, this was a hurried glance inside, but it was pretty awesome from what I saw.

*by other dorms I mean other rooms

Hubbard,

Congratulations! Blair is a superb boarding school. I am a graduate and I view Blair as the most rewarding educational experience of my life. Best decision I ever made…I think you will feel the same.

is flightdeck a dormitory? I was looking for it on the virtual map on Blair’s website, but I could not find it.

It’s the top floor of Insley, but it is managed as a separate dorm.

Another question that I have is if there is any campus security. My mom is the one who wants to know. Personally, I don’t think it is necessary considering Blair is preety much isolated. From all the tours I went on, the only school I remember that had security was Hotchkiss. I don’t know how common it is among bs, but I guess it is good to know.

I know you need a key card to get into your dorm. I’m not aware of other security features, so you should check with Admissions on that. For the 4 years my son was there, I never worried about security, nor did I hear of incidents that merited heavy security. Almost all the faculty live on campus and many in the dorms. If not the dorms, they live in the surrounding houses. The campus is well-lit.

Hi, Burb Parent. i just applied to blair academy a few days ago and i just want to know are they very hard on accepting students???

Emma828,

Are you applying for admission this coming fall?? I can tell you that their acceptance rate this year hovers at about 30%, but that they may look at a couple of additional students if they are very strong academically. How did the admissions office advise you in this regard??

I’m bumping this because I just reposted some typically excellent advice that Burb Parent had posted (in a thread regarding the PSAT/NMSQT) and I know others here have relied on her for sound, sage advice, at times involving some very important and heart-rending decisions…so I thought this would be the best place to share the sad news that earlier this year she passed away due to cancer, way, way too young.

People here in the Boarding School forum universe know her as an advocate and champion of Blair Academy…and of students and prospects interested in the school, so I’m leaving this news and remembrance here. Of course she loomed much larger here on CC. My son, for example, never considered Blair as an option but in a big pinch during my own turn as a clueless parent going through the application/decision process, I turned to Burb Parent among a few people I knew I could trust and deal with candidly and very personally. And beyond the boarding school world she was active in forums beyond this one, particularly as her own son moved on to college.

Odds are that not everyone on CC who was indebted to her for her insights, wisdom and counsel will see this note, but it seems to me like a Blair Academy thread is the best place to share this sad news because she was such a big supporter of Blair Academy and was so effective at articulating why it is a top-notch boarding school option.

How sad! I learned a lot about Blair and boarding school in general from Burb Parents posts. God Bless Burb Parent and her family.

Oh, what sad news this is for me. She seemed like such a thoughtful, helpful, sincere person. I know I was helped a great deal by her, both on the board and when I, too, reached out to her for advice I could trust. Knowing now that she was fighting cancer even as she was helping me, never saying a word about her troubles, makes me feel very humble. Her family must have been very lucky to have her.

fun is fun, though retired from this board, occasionally lurks here and is saddened by this news. fif used to give BurbParent some gentle grief for unfailingly refering to Blair as “nurturing”. She took it very well, and was a thoughtful and clearly, a caring person.

RIP

hi! i was just accepted into blair for 2013 as a rising sophmore. this is my first time at a boarding school, plus i just moved to new york. i was just wondering if anyone knew approximately how big the dorm rooms would be? and if anyone knew the levels of blair’s girls’ tennis and swimming team?
