Block scheduling... Should child take Spanish courses back to back?

My D is quite good at Spanish, wants to become fluent, thinks she will be a teacher down here in Texas so this will be a great skill to have. The school offers up to Spanish 4. She has taken Spanish 1 in 8th grade. She starts 9th next year. Each class takes just one semester since its block scheduling. If she takes her Spanish all back to back, she’ll be done by the beginning of sophomore year. Then what? She’ll be quite rusty when she starts again in college. Is it better to space it out, then? What have others done?

I have decided to wait until junior and senior to take my foreign language.

I can take all four in two years.

Block scheduling is really bad for students, imo. What are your cc local college options to continue Spanish? Ideally she should take them back to back and continue from there at the college level. If she starts junior year, she’ll probably have forgotten all her Spanish from 8th grade.

I agree with ^ - block scheduling doesn’t work for sequential subjects (math and foreign language in particular). See if she can take those classes back to back, then continue at community college. Note that if she has High School Level 4, she’ll probably start in either College Level 3 or College Level 4 (depending how good your CC program is - check the textbooks). She should keep going with it until she starts in college, because otherwise she’ll get really rusty. You can also plan for her to go to a language camp (Concordia language villages are fun but efficient; Middlebury is intense; intensive summer review ‘camps’ at Ole Miss or Penn State are in-between in terms of intensity and fun.) You can also plan for her to do a year abroad with AFS, YFU, Nacel, etc.

As do I, particularly in math and FL. But with your school, it is what it is. For your DD, @MYOS1634 gives some great options.
