Blue Book CR question

Can’t find a thread for this so i decided to repost it… the question is on page 786 and it is #8…

"Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein centers on a scientist’s _____, the overweening pride that makes him believe he can usurp nature.

A. obstinacy
B. Hubris
C. Impetuosity
D. Valor
E. Callousness

I was stuck between A and B

A. Stubborn
B. Arrogance/pride

I mean i can sort of see why B is correct as it is his overweening pride and A is pretty much thinking about too hard about it (thinking outside the box) but i am still a little confuse to why A would not work…

Arrogance + Stubbornness are very similar and he is definitely stubborn

dictionary.com says: “excessive pride or self-confidence” = “overweening pride”

stubborness is stubborness. hubris is excessive pride which is basically a synonym to “overweening pride”. In any case, obstinacy means stubborn and not pride.

thank you… i guess you are right. I thought too hard about it and ended up getting it wrong (as i did not know what hubris meant while i was taking it)…

A would work if B wasn’t an answer choice as he technically is stubborn, but pride is a better answer.

thank you again

no problem. glad I could help. I tend to overthink things. And then it screws me over. I need to learn how to know when to do it and when not it
