blue jeans for a guy for an SEC school?

I mean this respectfully. And I know I’m late to this party, but things haven’t changed. You are confusing CREASES with PLEATS. And pleats are a HUGE no no. Only a gramps would wear that. Not even a middle aged man should wear pleats in their pants.
Also, just to reiterate this in 2015: Cargo shorts are out! I don’t care if the stores still sell them. Greek or non-Greek, cargo shorts are out, out, out!

NC State is much different in style, than the SEC Deep South schools. Just sayin.

This thread is fascinating from a sociological standpoint.

First of all, I thought the SEC was the Securities and Exchange Commission, but now I know it’s something else important, too.

And second of all, all these moms buying clothes for their college guys! And moms ironing for their grown men sons!

My DS (first year at an, obviously, non-SEC school) has been in charge of his own wardrobe (yes, with my money) since early high school. He generally looks nice, but I sure don’t keep track of his brands and preferences. He’s been doing his own laundry since middle school, and any ironing he wants done, he knows how to do.

Not dissing anyone, just marveling at all the different ways we live and think … and dress.

Normally we don’t allow resurrections of old threads, but I am going to make an exception this time because of the interesting comparison as to how things change in just a few years. Have fun, those of you that are into this kind of thing.

NC State (an ACC school, not that it matters) has too many STEM kids and not that big of a frat presence to follow the southern dress “rules.” Lots of flannel (when cold) and jeans, athletic wear, khaki shorts and t-shirts when warm. Girls seem to favor sundresses and cowboy boots. Cute look!

Here’s a question… Do guys even care if they fit in, or are wearing what other people do? My son purposefully wears ultra casual clothes and specifically Teva sandals because for some reason it irritates his frat brothers. I personally think guys critiquing other guys clothes is just plain weird, so maybe they should just wear whatever they like!

I do buy many clothes for my sons. Mostly over Christmas, where I either gift them clothes or take them shopping. Neither of them are into it, and it is quite painful, but they won’t seem to shop other times by themselves. I would not iron for them, though… Our family does not iron.

"Here’s a question… Do guys even care if they fit in, or are wearing what other people do? "

Well in my sons case it only matters if it matters to his GF. So he does have some clothes that she bought him that he wears on occasion…

I have one son who is very into fashion, or want he thinks of as fashion. My other son is into soft and comfortable. When I find something that works for him, he usually gets multiples and different colors of the same thing if possible. He really doesn’t care what other people think. His “look” these days is black sweats and black tee shirts, whether it’s 20 degrees out or not. He also wears comfortable (and expensive, but that’s irrelevant to him) shoes, almost exclusively. He does own a pair of dress shoes and a pair of snow boots, but otherwise wears the same shoes every. Single. Day.

Depends on the guy and “other people”? I guess if you want to belong to a particular group, you need to follow the “dress code” but chances are if you have various pierced body parts, dye your hair monthly to reflect your mood and wear skinny black jeans, you aren’t likely to pledge a fraternity where the brothers shop at Brooks Brothers et al.

This is a fascinating thread to read immediately after the one about identifying American tourists.

My daughter is at Auburn. Cargo shorts and pleats are a definite no go. Girls almost seem to dress more casually on a daily basis than the boys. Nike shorts and big t shirts seem to be the uniform. Also, girls do not wear make up on a daily basis to class. Those who do are referred to as try hards. Boys are definitely preppy. Things are getting a bit more bohemian now with free people being a big fashion influence.
I don’t think I’ve seen boys in jeans.
As for us adults at games it’s always spirit wear of some kind.

I will say I do not know where they hide the average looking girl at Auburn. I have never seen so many truly naturally pretty girls in one place in my life.

Depends on one’s social circle, but not among most fellow males I hang with or in my formative years.

In fact, a boy/male teen who is “too obsessed” with fashion or his appearance would have had his masculinity challenged in my old childhood NYC neighborhood of the '80s. Sometimes to the point of violence.

Even now and among more open-minded college and adult friends, it’s extremely rare for the topic of one’s clothing choices would come up when I’m with fellow male friends.

I estimate 90% of the time any comments about my clothing choices/appearance come from my female friends and to a lesser extent, mom and older relatives whose notion of “being properly attired” comes from the formalistic upper-middle class WASP mainstream culture of the '50s era.

Maybe I have a bad circle of male friends. Our ideal GF…including ones currently in relationships is to have one who loves us even if we dress up like absolute slobs, reeking of odors, and we take to places like the local junkyard for a date.

I’m sure that DS dresses like a slob most of the time. However GF’s parents have posted a number of pictures of DS and GF. DS always looks “dressed” up in the pictures. Which is fine with me.

Check out the other school across the state. They’re not just better at football…

And then there are those UA peeps who can’t let an AU compliment go - smh

Yes - they wear blue jeans all over the place (including frat boys) in the winter / still wear flat front khakis/shorts depending on what they are doing but it is not a frat party all day, every day.

They dressed the same at Ole Miss as Alabama as Auburn and I’ve been to UGA and GaTech many times as well - they all look alike and seldom care about ironing unless they have an event/date.

@chardo - Yikes. Did you read the part where @eyemamom said her daughter went to Auburn?

I’m really not interested in any kind of typical hateful Alabama talk. There is a reason they’re such a hated school. For the record I’m sure there are equally beautiful girls, it really wasn’t the point.

Nothing hateful, no denying Auburn girls are attractive. Just stating that the girls at UA are also stunning. What is it about that state?

But at UA, chances are they’re not from Alabama.

NovaDad - what does that even mean?
