Blues music essay? (topic)

Well I just started writing my college essay. I was hoping to get some good advice about my topic. I’m planning to write about blues music. I have been playing the guitar for 7 years; it’s my passion. For the last 2 years i played blues music, so i wanted to get into details about the genre.

How much of the essay should i spend describing the history of Blues genre and blues artists? In my first rough draft, i used 214 words (3 paragraph including a 81 word quote) just introducing the subject.

Is it okay to use song lyrics in my essay? I was gonna use B.B. King’s lyrics from “Lucille”. (81 words) And yes, it is relevant to my point.

My main point and thesis is that blues music helps express emotions. Blues music is mainly improvisational, so it’s a much better medium for expressing one’s self than other genres. I faced troubling emotions and consternations throughout my life that i overcame by expressing myself through music.
Should I go into details about what caused my troubling emotions (which is mostly girls and family problems)? Or make it more general?

colleges i hope to apply to are: Boston College, Case Western University, University of Rochester, Emory University, Wake Forest University .
